🕯 Chapter VII: The Bride Beneath the Crypt
From Whispers in the Grave-Bloom Chapel
A novel by Alessandra Graziella Di'Stefano
They say she walked to the altar barefoot,
veil dragging behind her like a funeral train.
No one saw her face.
No one asked if she had chosen.
The bells rang not for love,
but for silence.
Because silence was holy.
And she had always been too loud.
Alessandra wasn’t looking for a wedding.
She was looking for the dress.
It called to her from beneath the chapel,
from a locked chest carved with teeth and tears.
She found it by accident.
(But nothing in this place is ever truly accidental.)
The lace was yellowed.
The bodice, torn.
But the moment she touched it, her skin erupted in flame.
Not fire—
memory.
She remembered the dress from dreams she’d never had.
The Raven screamed from the rafters
as she pulled the dress over her head.
The world tilted.
Her feet bled.
The veil wrapped itself around her throat
like a vow tightening into noose.
She stumbled forward
and found herself inside the chapel—
but not as it was.
As it had been.
Candles lit.
Pews full of people with no faces.
A priest with no shadow.
A groom whose hands were already crimson.
She did not walk to him.
She ran.
And at the altar,
she ripped the veil from her face and screamed:
“I DO NOT CONSENT.”
The stained glass shattered.
The faceless guests crumbled to ash.
And the groom—
the one who had waited centuries—
fell to his knees,
weeping blood from sockets that had never held truth.
A ritual to break ancestral bondage disguised as a marriage rite.
Take the veil from a forgotten place.
Write your name along its hem in salt.
Do not wear it unless the moon is full.
When the veil tightens, do not pull away.
Say the word “NO” until it becomes thunder.
If your voice cracks, scream anyway.
If your tears fall, collect them in your palm.
They are the ink of freedom.
She awoke in the crypt,
dress soaked in rain that hadn’t fallen.
The veil was gone.
But her throat still bore the imprint of the vow
she had finally broken.
