... Read moreIt feels like just yesterday we brought Luna home, and honestly, the first few days were a blur of excitement, cuddles, and a fair bit of puppy chaos! If you're thinking about adding an Australian Shepherd to your family, let me tell you, they are truly special. Luna, our purebred Aussie, is exactly as her breed description suggested – incredibly intelligent, full of energy, and fiercely loyal. We knew we wanted a dog that could keep up with our active lifestyle, and an Aussie seemed like the perfect fit. So far, she hasn't disappointed!
One of the first things we focused on was helping Luna settle into her new environment. It’s a big change for any puppy, leaving their littermates and coming to a new home. We made sure she had a cozy crate set up, which has become her little safe haven. It's great for potty training too! For the first few nights, we kept her crate next to our bed to make her feel more secure. Lots of soft blankets and a toy that smelled like her old home really helped ease her transition. Plus, endless belly rubs, of course!
Training has been a big part of our routine from day one, and thankfully, Luna is incredibly treat-motivated, which makes things a lot easier! Aussies are known for their intelligence, so they pick up commands quickly, but they also need a lot of mental stimulation to prevent boredom. We've started with basic commands like 'sit,' 'stay,' and 'come,' and she's already doing amazing. Short, frequent training sessions work best for her attention span. I've found that using high-value treats really keeps her engaged. We're also working on leash training, which has its moments, but she's getting there.
Beyond training, exercise is non-negotiable for an Australian Shepherd. These aren't couch potatoes! Luna has boundless energy, and if she doesn't get enough physical activity, she definitely lets us know by finding her own 'entertainment' (usually chewing on something she shouldn't!). Daily walks, playtime in the yard, and interactive toys are essential. We're looking forward to introducing her to more challenging activities like agility once she's a bit older and her joints are fully developed. It's a commitment, but seeing her happily zoom around makes it all worth it.
Socialization is another key area. We want Luna to be a confident and friendly dog, so exposing her to different sights, sounds, people, and other vaccinated dogs has been a priority. Puppy classes have been invaluable for this! She gets to interact with other puppies and learn appropriate doggy manners. It's been so much fun watching her learn to play and explore the world around her. This journey with Luna is just beginning, and I can't wait to share more of her adventures with you all!
