tired but grateful @georgia @IVY YOUNG
Completing a nursing placement is nothing short of a transformative journey. Over the course of three weeks and 120 hours, I learned that nursing is as much about endurance and dedication as it is about compassion and communication. One surprising highlight was the sheer number of therapeutic conversations — over two and a half million moments, figuratively speaking — that helped build relationships with patients and staff alike. The fast-paced environment meant keeping track of countless details, like remembering 73 patient names and answering more than 500 call bells. Surviving 15 handovers and participating in 45 medication rounds tested my focus and ability to work collaboratively under pressure. The caffeine intake, tallying nearly 14,000 mg, became a bittersweet necessity to maintain energy during long shifts. Despite the physical and mental exhaustion, the experience was incredibly rewarding. It’s these challenges, including humorous moments like being caught with nails during clinical practice, that shape resilience and professional growth. Being unsure whether certain tasks are permitted — "am I allowed to do this?" — is a common feeling that reinforces the importance of mentorship and asking questions. Ultimately, the money made was zero, but the memories and skills gained are invaluable. This experience underscored the significance of patience, teamwork, and gratitude. To those about to embark on their nursing placements, embrace every moment — the tiring days and the proud achievements — as they form the foundation of a meaningful nursing career.
