Like many of you, I've often heard people ask, 'Why does Liberia's flag look so much like the American flag?' It's a question I absolutely love answering because it tells such a powerful and inspiring story about our nation's origins and its enduring connection to history. Our beautiful Liberian flag, with its striking red, white, and blue, and a single white star, often sparks curiosity. The resemblance to the American flag is no coincidence; it's deeply rooted in Liberia's founding. Liberia was established in 1847 by freed African Americans who emigrated from the United States with the help of the American Colonization Society. These brave individuals sought freedom and the opportunity to build a new life in Africa, away from the oppression they faced in America. When these pioneers declared their independence, they needed a symbol to represent their new nation. Naturally, they drew inspiration from the flag of the country they had come from, but with meaningful adaptations to reflect their unique journey and identity. The Liberian flag features eleven horizontal stripes, alternating red and white, symbolizing the eleven signers of the Liberian Declaration of Independence.
