books about female rage and unhinged women? sign me up!!! 🙋🏻♀️
these are probably my top book recommendations of that topic! these are all super different and unique from each other plot wise and I enjoyed all of these in different ways. Something about reading about an unhinged, unapologetic main character is so entertaining. And these 3 books do not disappoint in that department!
🩷My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh
A young woman attempts to sleep for an entire year in a very unhealthy way. This is so bizarre and unhinged, I loved it. This depicts a very raw take on depression and it’s affects on a person.
❤️A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G Summers
This book was insane. A food critic narrates the events of her life being a serial killer and how she ends up a convict. Warning: this has some gruesome gory content.
🖤Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
One of my favorite books of all time! This is a thriller about a woman’s revenge and rage. So captivating, you won’t be able to put it down.
Let me know your thoughts on these if you’ve read any of them!
... Read moreI completely get the obsession with books featuring unhinged women! There's something incredibly liberating and captivating about reading characters who defy societal norms, embrace their darker impulses, or simply navigate the world in a way that’s authentically, gloriously messy. It’s not just about 'female rage and revenge,' as seen in some incredible thrillers; it's also about a raw depiction of depression, deep-seated psychological complexities, or just women being unapologetically themselves, even when it's unsettling.
For anyone who, like me, is always on the hunt for the next 'most unhinged book,' I have a few more recommendations to add to your reading list. If you loved the unsettling vibe of *My Year of Rest and Relaxation*, you might also enjoy Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh. Another brilliant, darkly humorous, and disturbing character study from Moshfegh, Eileen Dunlop is a young woman working at a boys' prison in 1960s Massachusetts, whose inner life is a fascinating blend of alienation, perverse fantasies, and a desperate longing for connection. It’s truly a dive into the mind of an unconventional character.
Then there's the psychological thriller genre, which often serves up some of the best 'unhinged' female protagonists. If you're looking for a book with an amazing plot and a shocking twist, The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is a must-read. It centers on Alicia Berenson, a famous painter who shoots her husband and then never speaks another word. The story unfolds as a psychotherapist tries to uncover why she committed the murder, leading to a gripping narrative filled with suspense and a truly memorable female character who embodies a unique form of 'unhinged.'
Another one that kept me absolutely glued to the pages is Verity by Colleen Hoover. While Colleen Hoover is known for romance, this standalone novel is a dark, twisted psychological thriller. It follows a struggling writer, Lowen Ashleigh, hired to complete the remaining books in a successful series by injured author Verity Crawford. As Lowen sorts through Verity's notes, she uncovers an unfinished autobiography that reveals horrifying secrets about Verity’s life, including disturbing details about her marriage and motherhood. Verity herself is the epitome of an 'unhinged' character, making this book a truly intense and unforgettable experience.
What draws us to these characters? I think it's because they reflect parts of the human experience that are often suppressed or ignored. They allow us to explore the boundaries of morality, sanity, and societal expectations from a safe distance. Whether it's the quiet desperation of a woman attempting to sleep for a year, the brutal honesty of a serial killer, or the calculated revenge of a scorned wife, these stories offer a cathartic release and a deeper understanding of the complexities of the female psyche. So, if you're craving more books with unhinged women or exploring themes of female rage, these picks should definitely satisfy your craving for something truly different and thought-provoking!
