hypothetical scenarios: is this cheating?!
when I was in my early 20’s, I was very rigid about boundaries / l what we thought was acceptable for a monogamous relationship but I have loosened up a lot in time and enjoy experiencing giving & receiving love more freely.
I honestly used to be way more insecure and would get jealous and upset over hypothetical situations.
I am currently at a stage where if I see how charismatic, radiant and genuine someone is - then I want them to spread their love around with friends, coworkers, customers, strangers, etc. I don’t want to dull anyone’s shine, nor do I want him to dull mine… if that makes sense?!
i am pretty naturally ‘flirty’ but I’m not usually intending for things with others to go beyond this ‘playfulness’ but it’s fun to be touchy, joke around, laugh, hug and have deep convos with other people.
so for me, there’s a lot of (what most people would probably consider) grey area that I’m comfortable with after candidly talking these scenarios out.
maybe someday, I will want to be even more open and free spirited. maybe I will want to honor a union by keeping our energy more sacred. neither is right or wrong imo - it’s just whatever you and your partner prefer.
I hope these hypothetical scenarios / questions help you reflect on your own desires - whether that’s to be more monogamous or more open.

Navigating relationship boundaries can be incredibly tricky. What one person considers harmless, another might see as a serious breach of trust. I've personally learned that defining what 'cheating' means isn't a one-size-fits-all discussion; it's a deeply personal conversation every couple needs to have. For me, understanding those 'grey areas' has been a journey. It’s not just about grand affairs, but often the smaller, everyday interactions that can cause misunderstanding. This is where hypothetical scenarios become incredibly valuable. Instead of waiting for a situation to cause conflict, discussing these 'what ifs' beforehand can strengthen your bond and clarify expectations. Let's dive into some common hypothetical scenarios that often spark debate. These are prompts for your discussions, helping you explore what counts as cheating for your unique relationship: 1. Social Media Interactions: Is it okay for your partner to consistently like or comment on an ex's posts? What about sending DMs to someone attractive, even if it’s just 'friendly'? Adding new coworkers on social media – totally fine, or potentially problematic? Where do you draw the line with 'flirty' memes or inside jokes shared with others? Through open talks, I've realized it's less about the action and more about the intent and any *secrecy*. If something feels hidden, that's often a red flag for me. 2. 1:1 Hangouts & Emotional Connections: Your partner goes for a coffee with a new friend they find attractive. Is that an issue? What if they invite someone over to your shared space when you're not home? Having deep, emotional conversations with a close friend – where's the line between friendship and emotional intimacy that crosses a boundary? Sharing an Uber home late at night with a colleague. These situations can feel ambiguous. For me, transparency is key. If my partner communicates about it upfront, it usually feels okay. But if I only find out later, or if they seem defensive, that’s when I start questioning. 3. Contact with Exes: Being friends with an ex, attending their events, or helping them out. What if an ex reaches out for emotional support? How do you feel about your partner regularly texting or calling an ex? This can be a minefield! My personal stance has shifted from 'no contact' to 'it depends on the nature of the friendship and history.' Open communication and clear boundaries about why they're in contact are vital here. 4. Out Having Fun Without Your Partner: Wearing revealing clothes on a night out with friends. Is it self-expression, or inviting attention that disrespects your partner? Hugging, dancing, or being physically affectionate with others at a party. Sharing an Uber with someone after a night out. Traveling alone or with friends of the opposite sex. I used to judge outfits harshly, but now I see it as more about my comfort and my partner's comfort with my self-expression. For physical contact, playful hugs are often fine, but anything that feels like it could lead somewhere, especially with alcohol, definitely warrants a discussion. These aren't just questions about overt 'cheating,' but about 'micro-cheating' – those smaller, often subtle actions that can erode trust and emotional intimacy. It could be secretly texting someone with a romantic interest, or consistently prioritizing someone else's emotional needs over your partner's. Defining 'what counts as cheating' is a journey unique to every couple. It requires honesty, vulnerability, and a willingness to understand each other's perspectives. I hope these hypothetical scenarios help you initiate those crucial conversations and build stronger, more transparent boundaries together.
