let’s take out the trash (aka your bad habits)

life can be stressful. we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to “do it all.” and when we don’t live up to that in our heads, we beat ourselves up. we develop negative thought patterns and lean on vices to numb.

it’s easy to get discouraged and quit when you don’t see results / change right away but remember that slow progress beats no progress.

... Read moreWe all have those habits, right? The ones we know aren't serving us, but breaking free feels like climbing a mountain. I've been there, feeling stuck and overwhelmed by the idea of completely overhauling my life. But what if we just started with taking out the 'trash' of our unhealthy routines and thought patterns? It's much more manageable than you might think, and I'm here to share how I'm tackling it. First things first, you can't ditch what you don't recognize. For me, the crucial step was to truly "Identify Your Trash." This isn't about judgment; it's about honest self-reflection. I started with a "wellness journal" and literally wrote down things I do more frequently than I'd like. It was eye-opening! I used prompts like, 'Are there any habits I feel guilty about?' or 'When I feel stressed, what are the first things I turn to?' For example, I realized I was spending way too much time doomscrolling or reaching for comfort food every time I felt overwhelmed. Naming these specific habits made them feel less abstract and more like concrete items I could actually *address*. Once you know your 'trash,' the next step isn't just stopping, it's about finding "Modifications & Replacements." If doomscrolling was my habit, instead of just saying 'no more phone,' I tried replacing that time with something else. Maybe a quick walk outside, reading a physical book, or even just listening to music while sipping a cup of tea. It's about finding "Better Options" that still fulfill a need but in a healthier way. Think about the "Ice Cream Example" – instead of cutting it out entirely, maybe I choose a smaller portion or a healthier homemade version. The goal is to make the new habit enjoyable and tangible, so it feels less like deprivation and more like an upgrade. I found that if I couldn't completely replace a habit, even a small modification, like setting a timer for social media, made a huge difference. This journey isn't linear, and it's so important to "Have Grace With Yourself." We're not aiming for perfection overnight. There will be days when you slip up, and that's okay! The key is to acknowledge it, learn from it, and get back on track without beating yourself up. I constantly remind myself that 'slow progress beats no progress.' Celebrate the tiny wins – replacing just one unhealthy snack, skipping one doomscrolling session, or taking five minutes to journal instead of stressing. Each small step builds momentum and helps reinforce those positive changes, leading to a healthier mindset overall. Let's keep working on this together, one piece of 'trash' at a time!
