Black History 🤎🖤

... Read moreIt's so powerful to stand firm in who you are and declare 'I am Black History!' This phrase isn't just for February; it's a daily affirmation, a recognition of the strength, resilience, and beauty woven into our very being. When I first started my own journey of radical self-love, it felt revolutionary to simply exist authentically. Growing up, I often heard those backhanded compliments, like 'you're pretty for a dark-skinned girl' or 'you're so articulate for a Black woman.' It messes with your head, right? It makes you feel like your worth is conditional, that you're an exception rather than the rule. But I've learned to unpack those narratives. Now, I see my dark skin not as something to be 'pretty for,' but as a testament to the sun-kissed legacy of my ancestors, a canvas of endless beauty. My intelligence isn't an 'exception'; it's a birthright, a reflection of generations of brilliance that pushed boundaries and built foundations. Our clear skin, our gorgeous hair, our sharp minds—these aren't things we possess 'for a Black woman.' They are simply *ours*, inherent and undeniable. Here’s what I’ve found truly helps in cultivating this deep self-love: Affirmations, Daily: Start your day by looking in the mirror and saying, "I am beautiful. I am intelligent. I am worthy. I am Black History." It might feel silly at first, but consistency is key. Your mind starts to believe what you feed it. Curate Your Space: Fill your social media feeds, your bookshelf, and your friendships with images, voices, and people who affirm and celebrate Black women. Seeing ourselves reflected positively is incredibly empowering. Educate Yourself & Others: Understand the rich tapestries of Black history, culture, and achievements. When you know where you come from, you stand taller. And don't shy away from correcting misconceptions, gently but firmly, when they arise. Prioritize Your Wellness: Self-care isn't selfish; it's essential. This includes physical health, mental well-being, and emotional boundaries. Make time for what nourishes *you*. For me, it's often a quiet moment with a good book or a dance session to my favorite Afrobeats. Connect with Your Community: There's an unparalleled strength in sisterhood. Share your experiences, uplift one another, and find spaces where you feel seen, heard, and celebrated. We are stronger together. This journey of self-love is ongoing, but every step is a victory. It’s about recognizing that our existence, our joy, our very presence, is a form of resistance and celebration. This February 1, 2024, and every day forward, remember that you embody history, progress, and an unbreakable spirit. Love yourself fiercely, unapologetically, and without reservation. Because you, my dear, are beautiful, smart, and absolutely phenomenal, PERIOD!
