School-based OT and ABA therapy

Collaboration in the schools matters especially when supporting students with diverse learning, sensory, behavioral, and functional needs. 🤝🏾🤝✨

School-based Occupational Therapists and ABA therapists can work alongside one another, but their roles, approaches, and intervention priorities can look very different. Understanding both perspectives can help strengthen collaboration, improve carryover across environments, and better support student success throughout the school day.

We’d love to hear from both professions:

How would you explain the core differences and similarities between school-based OT and ABA therapy in the schools?

Share your professional insights, experiences, and perspectives below to help educate and support others in our school-based community. 💬📚

... Read moreIn my experience working in school environments, effective collaboration between Occupational Therapists (OTs) and ABA therapists is essential for supporting students with complex needs. While both professionals aim to improve students’ functional abilities and educational outcomes, their methods and priorities tend to differ, complementing each other. Occupational Therapists focus primarily on helping students develop the skills necessary for daily school activities such as fine motor tasks, sensory processing, and functional independence. They often address how sensory challenges or physical limitations impact learning and participation. For example, an OT might design sensory diets or adapt classroom materials to enhance focus and engagement. On the other hand, ABA therapists apply behavior analysis principles to shape and reinforce positive behaviors, improve communication, and reduce problematic behaviors. Their interventions are highly data-driven, focusing on observable behavior changes through reinforcement strategies. ABA therapy is particularly effective for students with autism spectrum disorders and behavioral challenges. When these two disciplines work together in a school setting, the benefits can be remarkable. I have seen cases where combining sensory strategies from OT with ABA’s behavior modification techniques led to improved attention and decreased disruptive behaviors. This joint approach allows for supports that carry over across various environments, from the classroom to recess and lunch. For example, implementing a sensory break recommended by an OT before a challenging academic task can prepare a student to better engage with ABA-taught skills. Such interdisciplinary communication requires clear understanding of each other's roles and ongoing dialogue among team members, including teachers and families. Overall, understanding and respecting the unique contributions of both school-based OT and ABA therapy promotes a well-rounded, student-centered approach. Collaboration ensures that strategies are complementary rather than conflicting, maximizing student success and wellbeing throughout the school day.
