As a flight attendant, one of the best perks of the job is definitely getting to explore new cities, even if it's just for an overnight layover. My recent trip to Des Moines, Iowa, was a perfect example of making the most of that precious time with my wonderful colleagues. While many might think of inflight catering as the extent of our food experiences, layovers in places like Des Moines are where the real culinary adventures begin! Forget the airplane snacks for a moment; in Des Moines, we dove headfirst into the local food scene. I absolutely loved discovering places like FONG'S PIZZA, where we tried their famous "The Iowan pizza" – a truly unique local flavor! We also indulged in some incredibly creative appetizers, like the Chili & cornbread egg rolls and the Crab Rangoon egg rolls. It’s these unexpected finds that really make a layover special. And for a sweet treat, you can't go wrong with Mollys Cupcakes; they have some seriously delicious options that hit the spot after a day of exploring. Beyond just eating, a layover is a mini-vacation. Sometimes, after a long flight, all you want to do is relax, maybe catch up on a "layover movie full movie" in your hotel room. But often, the urge to explore kicks in! In Des Moines, we took advantage of the beautiful weather to stroll along The riverwalk, enjoying the city's charming atmosphere. It's amazing how much you can soak in, even in a short afternoon in Iowa. These moments of discovery are what make the job so rewarding, showing us different facets of life outside the cabin. Navigating different time zones, like adjusting to Iowa's Central Time, is just part of the flight attendant life. But it's that constant movement that brings us to incredible places like Des Moines. While some might be looking for more permanent "jobs des moines no degree" type opportunities, for us, it's about experiencing the city keenly, even if briefly. You get a sense of the community, discover its unique spots, and appreciate what makes it special. Every layover offers a chance to see a new corner of the world, creating memories with your 'co-hearts' that last long after the flight lands.
