Luna Slice ACCT-A-207864 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Luna Slice must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14TH at 10AM. Should Luna Slice’s medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Meet our beautiful Luna, who's a little slice of heaven! Luna Slice is a sweet and shy girl who has been through a few different homes and is now looking for a safe place to settle down! Luna arrived at the shelter as a stray on 11/25, but we were able to get in touch with her owner and found out they had already set an appointment to surrender her and gave permission to place her up for adoption. Luna is quite overwhelmed in the loud shelter and it's clear how fearful she is, but she has shown that she opens up with a kind handler and treats! She is doing her best to stay housetrained. Luna has had several meets with other dogs, but has sometimes been conflicted in her interactions. If you have any dogs at home, please bring them along for a meet. She will likely need a very slow introduction period in the home. Because of some behavioral concerns in her previous home, Luna is looking for a home without children. Due to her length of stay, Luna is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter.
BEHAVIOR:
Per staff 12/8: Luna has always been perfectly behaved with me when I have had her out. She will squint and submissive smile at me in the kennel, and I can't resist taking her for a walk. Luna was scared to walk through the kennels because of all the barking dogs, so I ended up having to carry her out and had no issues. She is very housebroken and went potty as soon as we were outside. I then had to carry her back in because she was too scared to go back into the kennels. We stopped in the lobby where she saw another small dog and some strangers and did super well with them. She sat nicely and allowed me and [another staff member] to pet her all over before allowing me to pick her up again. She also showed interest in the other dog but was not aggressive in any way and was easily redirected.
Per staff 12/8: She did great meeting a male (potential) adopter today. Allowed all pets and leaned in to him a few times for said pets.
Per staff 12/8: Got Luna out for a meet with potential adopters. She was eager to see me at the kennel, wagging her tail, giving submissive smiles and leashed very easily. She walks great on leash and went potty right when we got outside. She greeted both potential adopters loosely with wagging tail and allowed all pets. She had an encounter with another cold club dog and she was super excited seeing him in a distance giving play bows but once they got close to sniff she became reactive, barking hard and lunged but no contact was made. She seems reactive to other dogs when they get close to her but seeing them in the distance she is fine. I also took her to the barn cats out back and she did great around them! She got close enough but had zero reaction and didn't really seem to care that they were there. I was able to walk her away easily. She hopped right into her kennel and I unleashed her without issue. She seems very sweet but also is cautious and cowers while walking if theres a lot of noise/commotion.
Per volunteer 12/7: Does not walk past kennels.
Per staff 12/5: Super housebroken!
Per staff 12/2: Doing a meet - went really well, was alerting at the door and crying to get out at first. I took her outside and she went right to the bathroom.
Per volunteer 12/1: Aw Luna Slice, you know how to tug at the heart strings. Sweet Luna Star was trembling in her kennel but also wagging her tail so hard that she was shaking her whole body. She leaned in for pets and comfort and allowed for an easy leashing. She did splat on her way out when another dog was coming in. Once outside, she wandered a little bit but mostly wanted to stay close. She is very, very sweet but scared. She had a hoard of uneaten treats and dinner in her kennel. I hope she finds the stomach to eat. Poor Luna Slice wants to leave ACCT ASAP.
Per volunteer 12/1: No toy interest. Stops, tried running her in [the kennel] - used treats.
Per staff 11/30: Fearful. Will put the brakes on, use treats to help move her.
Per volunteer 11/29: Luna Slice greeted me with a wiggly body at her kennel door. Body language seemed a little scared as I opened the door but she was wagging her tail and easily allowed leashing. Walks very nicely on leash and easy to guide. She didn’t know how to take treats at first, but takes them gently when she eventually figured it out! She took some pets as well. She knows sit but seemed to be spooked when I gave her the direction with my hand. Seemed interested in toys and acted like she wanted to chase them but didn’t know what to do. She got zoomies- they were so cute! She did air hump next to me a bit but it was very gentle and never actually mounted my leg. Silly goofy girl- she’s a whole bunch of fun once she gets more comfortable! No issues returning to her kennel.
Per staff 11/29: Luna Slice had a dog meet today and did well, but did show some concerning behavior. She did well for the dog meet initially, but when the other dog (Sugar Smacks) approached her (Luna Slice's) handler she growled and air snapped at the other dog. She was able to regulate herself and go back to having good sniffs. However, Sugar Smack's handler gave Luna Slice some pets, and when Sugar Smacks tried to approach LS growled at SS again and bared teeth. It seems like Luna Slice may be resource guarding people/handlers from other animals. We have not seen this behavior directed towards people here in the shelter.
Per volunteer 11/28: Pancaked coming in. Sweet - warms up outside. Not interested in treats or play.
Per volunteer 11/28: Luna Slice is sweet as can be. She was sitting in the back of her kennel and although she was shy when I opened up the kennel door, she was excited to come out. She appears house trained. She sits and is very well-behaved. Good on a leash. She is scared but trying so hard to be brave and is a really good girl. Takes treats gently and knows sit/paw. Tried a dog meet with Sirra and she appeared neutral at first, but when the dog approached, she did curl her lip and eventually growl. Great clear warning signs that she was not interested.
Per volunteer 11/28: Rain - let me towel dry her.
Per volunteer 11/27: Snapped at dog with face meet. Likes hot dogs. Very sweet, very nice, slow runner.
Per volunteer 11/27: Fence meet good, interested and relaxed. A dream on leash, a bit timid. I look forward to watching her open up!
11/26 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Stray
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Slice was laying on the backside of his kennel when the handler approached. He gave some wags and would squint his eyes, lip lick, but would not come forward. The handler lowered the divider and went to the backside. She stood by the door and kept a low head and some wags. Allowed for easy leashing and exited without issue.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulled minimally
HANDLING:
In the room Slice was a nervous but sweet girl. She approached all handlers in the room with submissive body language and would give low wags, submissive smile, squint her eyes, and keep a low body. She allowed all handling without any issue and would curl up at our feet and solicit often. She was gentle and took treats gently as well when offered. Showed knowledge of sit and paw.
PLAY:
No interest
TOYS:
No interest
Per owner 11/26: Luna has been a bit of an escape artist lately she ran off as she was about to be bathed in our backyard and we couldn’t catch up to her. She did this once before but then turned around and came back but this time she didn’t. Yes, I have an appointment for surrender. Again the reason isn’t because she’s a bad dog, she just seems to get a bit agitated around my 5 year old so I’ve had to keep them separate/supervise Luna around him. She likes to run/ try to run off which I noticed increased when our daily walks/runs decreased due to my schedule change and how I’ve had to manage separate her and my son some times.
The owner had Luna for a few months and described her as “protective, has playful months, barks at men and other dogs. Loves females.” The best thing about her is that she is “loyal”. She lived with two children and a cat, but the owner reported that “she growls at my 5 year old and exposed her teeth… when he tries to play in her face or when he comes near me she seems to not like him getting too close.”
MEDICAL:
On 12/3, Luna Slice was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on medication.
During her intake exam on 11/26, Luna Slice’s ears, nose, and teeth were clean, but her ears were dirty and she had fleas.
