Mary ACCT-A-209211 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Mary must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19TH at 10AM. Should Mary’s medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Mary is a young adult female Shih Tzu who was brought to the shelter as a stray on December 16th. Her finder kept her for two days and noted that she had eye issues. They mentioned that she got along with their dog and, although initially scared, became cuddly once she felt comfortable. Upon arrival at the shelter, staff noted severe eye issues, so she quickly received an exam. She has a deep corneal ulcer on her right eye, with corneal hyperemia and hemorrhage of both eyes. She is blind and will need to go to an ophthalmologist for a full ocular evaluation. Due to these medical concerns, Mary is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner who can get her the care she needs.

MEDICAL:

During her intake exam on 12/17, Mary weighed 11 pounds. She had red and cloudy eyes with ocular discharge, her ears and coat were dirty, she had some yellow staining on her teeth, and her nose was clear.

On 12/16, Mary received a vet exam for the concerns about her eyes.

Objective:

Nares, and ears clean and clear with no discharge, OD eyelids closed with discharge - able to shave it away, OU - corneal hemorrhage, scleral hyperemia, conjunctival hyperemia, blind, 1 mm puncture identified OD… Mild dental calculus, retained 504… Fur coat clean and shiny with no ectoparasites or skin lesions detected, some matted areas of her coat… Ultimately, she has a deep corneal ulcer on the right eye and significant ocular abnormalities to both including blindness. I recommend she go to a rescue that can take her to an ophthalmologist for a full ocular evaluation.”

Assessment:

Deep corneal ulcer OD

Corneal hyperemia and hemorrhage OU

Blind OU

Diagnostics:

Fluorescein stain - no uptake OA, 1 mm stain uptake OD

Chem 17: Creat 0.1 (L), Amylse 450 (L), rest wnl

CBC: results pending - unable to perform due to machine not working today

Treatments:

Ofloxacin drops - 1 drop OU BID

Carprofen 25 mg - 1 tab PO SID x 7 days

Per staff 12/16: Noticed that the dog's eye was blood shot red and her other eye looks shut, she also walked into the wall, not sure if she's able to see completely, sent to to back office to be checked out.

BEHAVIOR:

Per staff 12/17: Mary easily allowed me to leash her and pick her up to carry her to the small dog room. I put her down and she was interested in the other dog, but wandered away doing her own thing. I was able to pick her up and put her back without any issues. Afterwards, I pet her for a bit and she was a little nervous because she can't see, but allowed all handling and sniffed me hand.

Per staff 12/16: Bright, alert, and responsive. Allowed all handling.

Finder notes: They had found her on 12/14 and brought her to the shelter because “I cannot permanently keep this dog... She seems to have eye issues”. With strangers, they described her as “very shy and scared but cuddly once she's comfortable.” In terms of her interaction with other animals, they said “I have a golden retriever and she mostly keeps to herself.” They also noted, “Seemed to walk normally on a leash but is small and has issues seeing curbs” and “Hair around eyes matted up and there was pus in the eyes.” Overall, they described her behavior as friendly, cuddly, scared, and quiet.
