... Read moreHey fitness fam! We all love a good arm day, right? But let's be real, a strong upper body isn't just about big biceps and triceps. It's built on a foundation of an even stronger core. That's why, in my arm day routine, I always make sure to dedicate some serious time to my core, especially with exercises like planks until failure.
Why "Planks Until Failure"? You might be thinking, "Planks are boring!" But trust me, when you push them to failure, they become a whole different beast. "Planks until failure" isn't just about holding a position; it's about building incredible core endurance, spinal stability, and even mental fortitude. It teaches your body to maintain tension under fatigue, which translates to better form and strength in almost every other lift you do – from deadlifts to overhead presses.
How I Tackle Planks Until Failure (and How You Can Too!):
Perfect Your Plank Form First: Before going to failure, make sure your basic plank is solid. Forearms on the ground, elbows directly under shoulders, body in a straight line from head to heels. Squeeze your glutes, brace your abs like you're about to get punched, and don't let your hips sag or pike up. Breathe deeply.
The "Until Failure" Part: Once your form is locked in, hold it for as long as you can *without compromising your form*. The moment your hips start to sag, your back arches, or you feel your core disengaging, that's failure. Don't push past good form just to extend time; you'll only risk injury. My goal is always to maintain that perfect straight line until I literally can't anymore.
Level Up with Weighted Planks: To really challenge myself, I often incorporate weighted planks until failure. This is where I'll have a weight plate (like those Rogue weight plates you might see in a home gym) placed on my lower back. Make sure the weight is secure and start with a lighter one! This extra resistance forces your core to work even harder to maintain stability, taking your core endurance to the next level.
Beyond Planks: Other Core Finishers I Swear By:
After planks, I often move onto other core exercises to hit different muscle groups and keep things interesting. Two of my favorites that target different aspects of core strength are:
Dead Bugs: These are fantastic for anti-rotation and ensuring both sides of your core are working equally. Lie on your back, knees bent at 90 degrees over your hips, arms extended straight up. Slowly lower one arm and the opposite leg towards the floor, keeping your lower back pressed into the ground. It's slower and more controlled than it sounds, but incredibly effective for deep core stability.
Ab Rollouts: Whether you use an ab wheel or a barbell, ab rollouts are phenomenal for anterior core strength and preventing hyperextension. Start on your knees, grab the handles, and slowly roll forward, extending your body as far as you can without letting your hips drop or your back arch. Then, pull yourself back using your core. This one really challenges your ability to resist gravity and keep your core tight.
Incorporating these core finishers, especially pushing planks until failure, has made such a difference in my overall strength and stability. It's not just about looking good; it's about building a functional, resilient body. Give them a try on your next arm day (or any workout day!) and let me know how you feel the burn!
Great 👍
