Fields of the Wood is managed by Heritage Ministries, a department of the Church of God of Prophecy. This beautiful, biblical outdoor theme park is located on more than two hundred acres of land in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.
The first temporary marker was erected on November 15,1940, at the site of the now permanent marble and concrete structure known as the Arise Shine marker. This was the beginning of an incredible project. Three other temporary markers were placed prior to the actual permanent construction which began in 1943.
The history of Fields of the Wood and the biography of A.J. Tomlinson are inextricably intertwined. It is impossible to discuss one without the other. From the Arise Shine marker, located on the site of the Bryant home where Tomlinson joined the organization that has come to be known as the Church of God of Prophecy, to the All Nations Cross, Tomlinson’s fingerprints cover the entire park.
A.J. Tomlinson, General Overseer of the Church of God of Prophecy until his death in 1943, personally directed much of the initial construction. M.A. Tomlinson, son of A. J. Tomlinson, and other leaders of the church continued this massive project after the death of A. J. Tomlinson. Many of the markers you see today were designed by L.S. Rhodes. His largest designs are the Ten Commandments and the New Testament markers.
... Read moreMy recent trip to Fields of the Wood was an unforgettable spiritual experience, especially the climb up the magnificent Ten Commandments Mountain. From the moment I passed through the white arched entrance labeled 'TEN COMMANDMENTS MOUNTAIN,' I felt a sense of anticipation for what lay ahead. It's not just a landmark; it's a journey through faith, meticulously laid out on a scenic green hillside.
The ascent truly begins with a long, concrete staircase that winds its way up the mountain. What makes this climb so unique is that every step is flanked by numerous white markers, each bearing profound biblical texts. I found myself pausing at many of them, reflecting on verses like the one from St. Matthew 22, detailing the first and great commandment to love God and neighbor, or the powerful message from John 15:12: 'THIS IS MY COMMANDMENT, THAT YE LOVE ONE ANOTHER, AS I HAVE LOVED YOU.' These markers aren't just signs; they're invitations to meditation, turning a physical climb into a spiritual pilgrimage. You can even spot a marker dedicated to 'JUSTIFICATION,' featuring verses from Romans 5:1 and Titus 3:7, which really makes you ponder the depths of faith.
Reaching the summit offers a breathtaking panoramic view, and that's where you truly grasp the scale of the Ten Commandments. Laid out in white on the green hillside below, alongside the Major and Minor Prophets, it's an awe-inspiring sight. Seeing them from above gives you a new perspective on their monumental significance. It’s hard not to feel a profound sense of reverence in such a place.
Beyond the Ten Commandments, the park offers other incredible spots. I also made my way to the white arched entrance of 'PRAYER MOUNTAIN,' another serene area perfect for quiet contemplation. Near one of the staircases, I caught a glimpse of the words 'JESUS DIED FOR' spelled out on the ground, accompanied by three white crosses on a nearby hill – a poignant reminder of the core message of Christianity. Taking the time to explore these areas truly enhances the visit, offering layers of reflection and inspiration.
If you plan to visit, I highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as there's a good amount of climbing involved. Allow plenty of time, not just for the physical journey, but for the spiritual one. It’s a place where you’ll want to pause, read, and reflect. Fields of the Wood, especially the Ten Commandments Mountain, is more than just a biblical outdoor theme park; it’s a powerful experience that stays with you long after you descend back down.
