This biology study session covers fundamental topics ranging from the basics of prokaryotic cells to the complexities of plant reproduction and metabolism. Prokaryotes, such as bacteria and archaea, lack membrane-bound organelles and reproduce via binary fission, with their cell wall structure determined by Gram staining. The origins of life on Earth trace back 4.6 billion years, with pivotal experiments like Miller-Urey demonstrating the formation of organic molecules from early Earth conditions. The RNA world hypothesis suggests RNA may have been the first self-replicating molecule, crucial for the emergence of life. In microbial metabolism, organisms are categorized based on their energy and carbon sources: phototrophs use light to produce food, chemoheterotrophs consume organic molecules, and chemoorganoheterotrophs obtain both energy and carbon from organics. Transitioning to plant biology, the alternation of generations describes life cycles consisting of sporophyte (2n) and gametophyte (n) phases. Nonvascular plants like mosses are gametophyte-dominant, while vascular plants (ferns and seed plants) show sporophyte dominance and possess specialized tissues such as xylem and phloem. Vascular plants evolved roots, stems, and leaves, facilitating greater complexity and size compared to bryophytes, which lack vascular tissue. Seed plants enhance reproduction through seeds containing embryos, endosperm as a food source, and protective seed coats. Pollen enables fertilization without water by delivering sperm cells through pollen tubes. Understanding these concepts provides a strong foundation for further studies in biomedical science and laboratory research, linking fundamental biological processes with real-world scientific applications.
