... Read moreWe've all been there: you spend hours buried in textbooks, highlighting every sentence, only to draw a blank when it's time for the exam. It feels incredibly frustrating, and often leaves you wondering, 'Why did I forget everything I studied?' I used to think I just wasn't smart enough, but I learned that it's often not about intelligence, but about how we study. There are definitely wrong ways to approach learning, and thankfully, much better ways! One of the biggest culprits for forgetting is passive studying. Just re-reading notes or watching lectures without actively engaging with the material can give us a false sense of security. Our brains need to work to retrieve information to truly cement it into long-term memory. That's why Practice Retrieval is a game-changer. Instead of just reviewing, try to recall information from scratch. I started doing this by quizzing myself with flashcards, explaining concepts aloud to an imaginary audience, or even trying to rewrite my notes from memory before checking the original. It felt harder at first, but the improvement in what I actually remembered was incredible. Another common mistake I made was Ditch Multitasking. I used to try to study with music playing, my phone buzzing with notifications, and a TV show on in the background. My brain was constantly switching tasks, and nothing was truly sinking in. Now, I create a dedicated study environment where distractions are minimized. Putting my phone in another room or turning off notifications, even for short bursts, has made a huge difference in my focus and comprehension. It's amazing how much more you absorb when your full attention is on the task. And let's talk about Forget Cramming. We've all pulled all-nighters, right? While it might get you through the immediate test, that information usually evaporates just as quickly. My secret weapon for better retention is using the Pomodoro Technique and Study In Short Bursts. Breaking my study sessions into 25-minute focused intervals, followed by a 5-minute break, helps keep my brain fresh and prevents burnout. It's much easier to focus intensely for a short period, and these regular breaks actually help consolidate learning. This approach naturally leads to Spaced Repetition, where you revisit material over time rather than all at once, which is scientifically proven to improve long-term memory. I also found that changing my Change Location occasionally helps. If I'm feeling stuck or unmotivated at my usual desk, moving to a different room, a library, or even a coffee shop can provide a fresh perspective and boost my concentration. It signals to my brain that it's time to focus on something new. Finally, two other tips that have helped me immensely are to Prioritize Harder Subjects and engage in Reflection. I used to put off the subjects I found most challenging, but then I'd be tired and less receptive when I finally got to them. Now, I tackle them when my mind is freshest, usually earlier in the day. And after each study session, I take a few minutes for Reflection – thinking about what I just learned, identifying any lingering questions, or summarizing key points in my own words. This active mental processing helps solidify the information and ensures I truly understand it. By adopting these smarter study habits, I've stopped forgetting everything and actually started enjoying the learning process more!
