Hey everyone! You just saw a glimpse into my whirlwind day as an MMJ here at KX News in North Dakota, and let me tell you, no two days are ever truly alike! Being a Multi-Media Journalist means wearing many hats, and it’s a role that constantly keeps you on your toes. From waking up bright and early to hit the ground running, my goal is always to bring you the most compelling local stories. Today was a perfect example – we kicked things off diving deep into a major construction project happening in Mandan. It's fascinating how much goes into shaping our communities, and my job is to capture those details and explain their impact. Later, we visited an incredible welding camp. It was super cool to see skilled trades in action, and honestly, moments like these, where you get to learn about different walks of life, are what make this job so rewarding. You never know what amazing people and stories you'll encounter next! One aspect I really want to emphasize is the 'multi-media' part of being an MMJ. It's not just about reporting; I'm also filming, interviewing, and then heading back to edit my VOSOTs. It demands a lot of quickly adaptable skills, from framing a shot to crafting a coherent narrative under tight deadlines. And yes, sometimes it means enjoying a delicious honey matcha from Dunn Brothers in between shoots, which was a real treat today! The owner was incredibly sweet, and finding those little moments of connection with local businesses is another highlight of my day. People often ask how I got into this field. My journey started back at California Baptist University, where I majored in Business with a minor in Journalism and New Media. I also swam D1 all four years – that discipline and drive definitely translate into the fast-paced world of news! Launching my career at KX News right after graduating in June 2025 has been an incredible experience. Every day is a learning curve, pushing me to grow both professionally and personally. For anyone out there dreaming of becoming a reporter or an MMJ, my biggest piece of advice is to be curious, persistent, and always ready to learn. Embrace every opportunity to tell a story, no matter how small it seems. The heart of journalism is connecting with people and bringing their voices to the forefront.
