is post-nasal drip normal or a problem?

Post-nasal drip is one of those things nobody warns you about until you’re living with it. The constant feeling of something draining down the back of your throat is disgusting. I find myself sipping water nonstop just to make it less noticeable, but then I’m stuck clearing my throat all day and sounding like I have a cold!!

It gets to the point where I worry people think I’m sick or contagious when really it’s just my body reacting to pollen. Sometimes I spiral and wonder if it’s a sign of something worse, but then as soon as allergy season passes, it disappears.

💬Comment & tell me: Do you deal with this too? And if you do, have you ever found something that actually helps?

... Read moreYou know that constant throat tickle and the feeling of liquid draining down your throat? It's truly the worst, and I totally get why it makes you wonder if it's just 'drip season' or something more serious. I've been there, sipping water nonstop, clearing my throat, and feeling like I sound sick even when I'm not. It's frustrating to constantly worry if people think you're contagious, right? Beyond that annoying sensation, post-nasal drip can manifest in several ways, and recognizing these symptoms can help you understand what's really going on. For me, the most obvious sign is that persistent need to clear my throat or even a cough that just won't quit. Sometimes it feels like I'm choking on nothing because the mucus is just sitting there. But PND isn't just about a tickle. It can also lead to a sore throat from constant irritation, hoarseness in your voice, and even bad breath – which, let's be honest, is super embarrassing. I've also noticed it can sometimes cause a feeling of fullness in my ears or even earaches, which I never linked to PND until recently! When I'm having a particularly bad 'drip season,' I sometimes get a mild nausea from constantly swallowing mucus. So, what does this 'drip' actually look like in your throat? While you might not see a clear stream of liquid, what's happening is that excess mucus is slowly trickling down the back of your throat. If you were to look, you might see a thin film or streaks of mucus coating the back of your pharynx. It can also make the throat look a bit red or irritated due to the constant clearing and coughing. It's not always visibly dramatic, but the sensation it creates is unmistakable – that gross, sticky feeling that makes you want to swallow constantly. The causes of post-nasal drip are varied, and it's easy to panic and think, 'is this normal, or is my body trying to warn me about something serious?' Like you, I initially blamed pollen and seasonal allergies. And yes, allergies are a huge culprit! When pollen counts are high, my body goes into overdrive producing mucus to try and flush out allergens. But I've learned it's not always just allergies. Sometimes, it can be due to non-allergic rhinitis, where your nasal passages get irritated by things like dry air, strong perfumes, or even spicy foods, without an allergic reaction. Other common triggers I've come across include infections like the common cold, flu, or sinusitis. When I get a sinus infection, the PND is definitely worse and often accompanied by a headache. Even acid reflux (GERD) can be a sneaky cause, as stomach acid irritating your throat can trigger mucus production. Environmental factors like dry indoor air, especially with heating or air conditioning, can also thicken mucus and make it harder to drain, leading to that 'kazoo' sound you mentioned. Some medications, like certain blood pressure drugs, can also cause PND as a side effect. If you're like me and constantly wondering if your PND is just a nuisance or something more, keeping a little symptom diary can be really helpful. Note when it starts, what it feels like, and what might trigger it. For instance, does it only happen during certain seasons, or after eating specific foods? This can help you and a doctor pinpoint the cause. I've found that staying hydrated helps thin the mucus, and using a saline nasal rinse can literally wash away irritants. Sometimes, simply using a humidifier in my bedroom makes a noticeable difference, especially during those dry winter months. And while I'm no doctor, I've learned that if it persists, changes in color, or comes with other worrying symptoms, it's always best to get it checked out. It's all about finding what works for your body to stop sounding like you swallowed a kazoo forever!

Sounds like plain old allergies to me. Have you tried local honey? Or stinging nettle tea?
