When he wants kids and you don’t

I’ve always been sure I didn’t want kids. Since age 13. So I wasn't shy about telling my boyfriend from day one. But he thought he probably did want kids.

For a while, I worried we’d eventually outgrow each other. Not because I wasn’t honest, but because so many people assume I’ll change my mind. I never did. What changed was his perspective.

He started really thinking about what motherhood demands. The mental load, the body trauma, the way it impacts neurodivergent women like me. And he told me, “I’d rather have a life with you than chase an idea I never fully understood.” Now, we both see the freedom and possibility that a childfree life gives us. And it feels right.

💬Comment & tell me: has anyone ever questioned your stance on kids, and how did you handle it?

... Read moreDeciding not to have children is a deeply personal choice that many people hold from an early age, just like the author, who has known since age 13 that she did not want kids. When one partner desires children and the other doesn’t, it can create tension and uncertainty about the future. However, honest communication from the start, as shown in this story, helps clear expectations and prevent misunderstandings. One pivotal point in many such relationships comes when the partner wanting children reassesses what parenthood truly involves beyond the romanticized version. For instance, motherhood carries significant physical, emotional, and mental labor. This burden can be even more complex for neurodivergent women, who may experience heightened challenges due to sensory sensitivities, emotional regulation, and executive function differences. The partner in this story, after learning more about these demands and the unique impact on his girlfriend, chose to prioritize their relationship and shared vision over societal expectations or personal assumptions. This highlights the importance of empathy, education, and flexibility within relationships. Choosing a childfree life opens doors to freedom, rest, and countless possibilities. Without the responsibilities and commitments of parenting, couples often find more time and energy to invest in personal growth, travel, hobbies, careers, and mutual experiences that enrich their bond. For those facing similar dilemmas, the key takeaway is clear: ongoing open dialogue about personal values, the willingness to understand one another’s perspectives, and an acceptance of individual life choices help partners navigate these significant future differences. It’s also empowering to connect with communities and conversations that normalize childfree decisions and support neurodivergent experiences in relationships. If you’ve ever had to manage conflicting desires about children in your relationship, sharing your story can offer solidarity and insight. How did you approach those tough conversations? What helped you or your partner embrace a childfree path or find compromise? Engaging in such discussions fosters respect and helps build relationships rooted in authenticity and mutual understanding.

you guys are younger, so i get figuring it out together & it’s very sweet, but once you get to a certain age, most people have kids. i only date men who are through having children, have no babies or toddlers & (most importantly) who’s baby mom’s have moved on (have re-married or are on a committed relationship). if they cannot satisfy these requirements, i will not waste our time. when friends or family press on the subject, i ask them if they’d be the ones raising it. that usually does the trick.

I understand your point of view. But I think if he ever thought about wanting kids, this is very iffy. Because that doesn’t just go away bc he understands the effects on u and loves u. He probably will always want kids. And one day he might leave bc u might not want kids but someone else will. So idk good luck !
