periods myths we somehow believed 🥲

8/10 Edited to

... Read moreMany of us grew up hearing various myths about periods that shaped our understanding and attitudes towards menstruation, often causing unnecessary worry or confusion. For example, the belief that swimming during your period is unsafe is simply not true—using tampons, menstrual cups, or specialized period swimwear allows you to enjoy swimming without concern. A common exaggeration is the amount of blood lost during a period. In reality, most people lose about 2 to 3 tablespoons throughout their entire cycle, which is much less than the often-feared “liters.” This is important to know to avoid undue anxiety about normal menstrual bleeding. Cold drinks supposedly worsen cramps or make periods heavier, but scientific evidence doesn’t support this. It’s perfectly fine to drink whatever temperature beverage feels comfortable to you during your period, so no need to restrict yourself unnecessarily. The idea of periods syncing up with friends is widespread, yet scientific studies have not reliably substantiated this phenomenon. Menstrual cycles aligning in groups is more likely a coincidence rather than a biological rule. Exercise during menstruation is often discouraged in myths, but physical activity can actually alleviate cramps and boost mood through the release of endorphins. Listening to your body and adjusting exercise intensity is key. It’s also crucial to recognize that getting pregnant during your period is possible. Sperm can survive for several days, so if ovulation occurs soon after menstruation, conception may happen, making contraception important even during periods. Lastly, period blood is not dirty or toxic; it is simply a mix of blood, uterine lining tissue, mucus, and vaginal fluids, all normal components of the menstrual process. Understanding these facts helps foster a healthier, less stigmatized perspective on menstruation, empowering people to care for themselves without fear or embarrassment. If you experience unusual symptoms or heavy bleeding, consulting a healthcare provider is always the best course of action.
