This was my first time trying the Too Good To Go app. The only one available for the store was the Vegan Surprise bag. No I’m not vegan but I’ve tried their gluten free cupcakes before so I thought the vegan ones would be good too….and while they taste fine, they are just really dense and not soft/fluffy/moist like your typical cupcake. So I was a little disappointed but hey it was cheap so oh well! I am still going to eat them. Hopefully next time they have a surprise bag for the gluten free stuff.

... Read moreHey everyone! So, you might have seen my post about my first dive into the Too Good To Go app, where I snagged a 'Vegan Surprise' bag from Miss Moffett's Mystical Cupcakes. It was an interesting experience, and I totally get why some of you might be curious about this app, especially if you're just seeing its logo pop up!
For those who are new to it, Too Good To Go is an amazing app designed to combat food waste. Essentially, local businesses – think bakeries, cafes, grocery stores, and restaurants – sell their surplus food at a discounted price at the end of the day. You never quite know exactly what you're getting, which is where the 'surprise bag' concept comes in! It's a win-win: you save money on delicious food, and perfectly good items don't end up in the bin.
My particular bag, as I shared, was a 'Vegan Surprise' from Miss Moffett's. While their regular gluten-free cupcakes are usually my go-to, these vegan ones had a surprisingly dense texture. It wasn't bad, just different from what I expected. But that's part of the adventure with Too Good To Go! Every bag is a little mystery, and sometimes you hit the jackpot, and sometimes you discover something new that might not be your absolute favorite, but is still perfectly edible and a great deal.
If you're thinking of trying the app, here are a few tips I've picked up, even from just my first experience:
Be Quick! Popular stores and highly-rated bags tend to sell out really fast, especially towards the end of the day. Set notifications for your favorite spots if the app allows, or check frequently.
Read Reviews & Descriptions: While it's a surprise, store descriptions often give you a hint about what kind of items to expect. For example, a bakery might offer pastries, while a grocery store might have fresh produce or deli items. This can help you manage expectations, especially if you have dietary preferences like wanting gluten-free options.
Check Dietary Filters (Like I Did!): The app often has filters for things like 'vegetarian,' 'vegan,' or even specific items if a store regularly offers them. If you're hoping for specific items, like my dream of a dedicated gluten-free bag from a peanut-free bakery like Miss Moffett's, keeping an eye on these filters is key. Sometimes stores will specify a 'Gluten-Free Surprise Bag,' which is exactly what I'm hoping to snag next time!
Flexibility is Key: Embrace the surprise! You might get items you wouldn't normally buy, which can be a fun way to experiment with new foods.
Plan Your Pickup: Make sure you can get to the store during the specified pickup window. These windows are usually quite narrow, as the food is meant to be rescued before closing.
Beyond the savings, what I really love about Too Good To Go is feeling like I'm making a small difference. Every bag saved means less food waste, and that's something we can all feel good about. Plus, it's a fantastic way to discover local gems like Miss Moffett's Mystical Cupcakes, even if you just try a different side of their menu. Don't let one 'dense cupcake' experience deter you! Give it a try and share your own surprise bag stories!
