地図記号って「一覧を見て覚える」だけだと、すぐ混ざったり忘れたりしませんか？うちは小3で一度つまずいてから、地理院地図（国土地理院地図）を使って“家の近くで確認する”やり方に変えたら、びっくりするほど覚えやすくなりました。 やり方はシンプルです。地理院地図で自宅周辺を表示して、必要な範囲だけ印刷（A4でOK）。印刷した地図に、今日見つけたい記号（神社・寺・田んぼ・果樹園・茶畑・病院・消防署・警察署・市役所・税務署など）を親が丸で囲んでおきます。あとは散歩しながら「この建物が税務署なんだね」「消防署は車が出入りするから広いよね」みたいに、役割まで一言添えると記憶がつながります。 特に効果があったのは、似ている記号の見分け。 ・神社と寺：神社は鳥居が目印。実物の鳥居を見ると“神社の記号”がスッと入ります。 ・田んぼ／畑（田んぼの記号が複数あって混乱しがち）：田んぼが広がる場所に行って「水を張る時期だと見た目が全然違うね」と話すと定着しました。 ・果樹園／茶畑：木が並ぶ景色（果樹園）と、低い木が整列する畑（茶畑）を写真で見比べたり、近くにあれば実際に見に行くと混ざりにくいです。「果樹園に似てる地図記号」で迷う子には、現物イメージを先に作るのが近道でした。 あと、地図記号が難しい子には「1日3つだけ」作戦がおすすめ。今日は“消防署・警察署・病院地図記号”だけ、みたいに少量に絞ると成功体験が積めます。 おまけで、方角（東西南北）の覚え方も散歩と相性◎。地図を北に合わせて持ち、「今、太陽がある方はだいたい南だね」など体感させると、地図を読む力も一緒に伸びました。 地理院地図は航空写真にも切り替えられるので、「地図記号→航空写真→実物」の順で確認するとさらに理解が深まります。丸暗記に戻らず、体験で“社会の学び”をリアルにしていきましょう。
