Practiced self control at the bookstore

Rue Sainte-Catherine
2/16 Edited to

... Read moreVisiting bookstores often presents a delightful challenge for avid readers who love to explore new titles and genres. Practicing self-control in such an environment is quite rewarding, as it helps cultivate mindful decision-making about what to read next. When I went to a bookstore recently, I faced the same temptation of picking up more books than I could realistically read. Inspired by the concept of mindful reading, I focused on quality over quantity. This meant selecting just a couple of books that genuinely interested me, rather than succumbing to impulse purchases. Interestingly, among the recommended titles and award winners displayed, there were books like “Don’t Barnabus The Project” by El Sharpston and beautifully illustrated works by Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat that catch your eye. These book picks represent how curated choices can lead to a much more fulfilling reading experience. Choosing just two books helped me reflect on my reading goals and prioritize genres or topics I wanted to explore more deeply. Rather than accumulating unread books, practicing this restraint increases the joy of actually finishing and appreciating the stories and knowledge within. It also helps support our local bookstores – often filled with passionate recommendations and unique literary finds. Overall, mindful browsing at bookstores isn’t just about controlling spending; it enriches the reading journey. For anyone who struggles with book-buying guilt or feeling overwhelmed by too many options, adopting this self-control approach can transform how you engage with books and nurture your reading life.
