mini plants: why & how 🌱

soooooo you may have noticed from some of my posts, i have a ton of miniature plants. i’m a little obsessed with mini things and love experiments with micro propagation. mostly because they are toooo cute 🫶

this might sound strange, but this is basically houseplant bonsai! it’s intentionally keeping plants small through containment & cutting 🌱

i have done this mostly in water, and have found the plants that are most successful with water propagation have been the best to use (pothos, monsteras, etc)

i first learned about this when i stumbled upon this european plant shop’s website and was blown away by their baby plants! not only are the adorable, but they sell for several times more than a regular plant 🤑

so i thought i would share some of my passion and what ive been doing lately. my latest experiments are now taking the rooted micro cutting from water into soil- more to come!!

... Read moreMicro plants, sometimes described as houseplant bonsai, offer a creative and sustainable way to enjoy greenery in compact living spaces. By propagating plants in tiny jars or vases, the limited space naturally encourages slow, compact growth, resulting in charming miniature plants that add unique aesthetic value to any room. This approach is especially effective with vining or slow-growing plants such as pothos, philodendrons, monsteras, peperomia, and hoya. These species respond well to cuttings propagated in water, where their roots develop quickly and visibly. Using charcoal in the water helps maintain cleanliness, while regular water changes and bright, indirect light ensure healthy growth. Maintaining micro plants requires some attention: rotating them encourages even growth, and containment through cutting keeps the size manageable. This not only makes them a fun hobby but also doubles as an educational experience for learning plant biology and propagation techniques. Besides their aesthetic appeal, mini plants are highly functional. Perfect for apartments or small desks, they add a touch of nature without demanding much space. They also make adorable, thoughtful gifts that are easier to share and care for than full-sized plants. Recent trends have shown these miniature plants can command premium prices due to their uniqueness and charm, especially when sourced from specialized European plant shops noted for their exceptional micro plant collections. For enthusiasts interested in expanding this hobby, transitioning rooted cuttings from water into soil is an exciting next step. This method can potentially increase plant longevity and allows more versatility in plant care. Overall, embracing micro plant propagation enhances indoor gardening by combining creativity, functionality, and the joy of nurturing living art that fits any lifestyle or space configuration.
