Cousins
All families have stories and mine is no different. It lasted about a decade if not a little bit longer. When my grandmother died, the family just fell apart. They always say when death in the family happens it puts a strain on the family and so many ways. Things were said and things were done leaving my mom and her siblings torn. That made it hard for me to want to continue relationship with my aunt and uncles even though at the time I was already in my early 20s. The last time I saw them they were very little. I remember babysitting them and changing diapers and just being a bigger older cousin. We have a 13 year age gap that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t of been a good cousin for them. It’s a shame how I missed out on their whole life and they missed out on ours, but it’s nice to have them back in my life. This year they both graduated high school and are going off to college, but at least I have ways of connecting now to social media and phone numbers they’re old enough to make their own decisions if they wanna have a relationship with me my relationship with my aunt and uncles slowly coming around it’s just it’s more awkward with them because I feel like I grew up more with my aunts and uncles than I did with my cousins.#storytime #lemon8contest #cousins #relationship #family #complicated #childhoodmemories

We even discovered some shared interests, which made bridging that age gap feel much smaller. It wasn’t about being the 'older cousin' telling stories from the past, but about being a supportive relative for their future. There’s definitely an awkward phase, especially since my relationship with my aunts and uncles is still a bit strained. It’s like navigating uncharted waters. But I’ve learned that it’s okay for things to be a little messy initially. The important thing is showing up and being genuine. I remember seeing a framed childhood picture of them during their graduation celebrations, and it reminded me of the bond we once had. It wasn't about erasing the past, but acknowledging it and building something new on top of it. Seeing my cousins mature, celebrate their graduation, and embark on their college journeys has been incredibly rewarding.
