Roadtrip NC to Salem
My roadtrip from North Carolina to Salem was an absolute dream, and I quickly realized that Salem itself is just the beginning of what the area has to offer! After settling in, I knew I had to explore the charming towns near Salem that everyone talks about. It's incredible how much history and beauty are packed into such a small region. One of my first detours led me to Marblehead, just a short drive from Salem. This town is simply picturesque with its narrow, winding streets, colonial architecture, and stunning harbor views. I spent a lovely afternoon just wandering through the historic district, admiring the grand old homes and boutique shops. I even found a cute little cafe for a delightful lunch by the water – it was incredibly peaceful. The atmosphere here is so different from Salem's spooky vibe; it's more about maritime history and New England charm. If you're looking for a relaxing escape from the Salem crowds, Marblehead is a perfect choice. Next on my list was a trip up the coast to Rockport. Oh my goodness, this place is like stepping into a postcard! Bearskin Neck, a tiny peninsula jutting into the harbor, is filled with art galleries, unique shops, and delicious seafood shacks. I couldn't resist trying some fresh lobster rolls while watching the boats in the harbor. The iconic Motif No. 1, a red fishing shack often painted by artists, is a must-see. The drive along the coast to get there was also part of the adventure, offering breathtaking ocean views. It truly felt like I was discovering hidden gems, and each town had its own distinct personality. The scenic drive reminded me of the impressive scale of bridges I crossed on my journey, like the George Washington Bridge on the way up from NC. If you have more time, don't overlook Gloucester or even Newburyport further north. Gloucester is a bit larger but still retains that classic New England fishing village feel. You can find amazing seafood restaurants, beautiful beaches like Good Harbor Beach, and even go whale watching from its harbor. Newburyport offers a vibrant downtown with brick sidewalks, historic architecture, and a lively arts scene – perfect for an afternoon stroll and another delicious lunch. These are fantastic options if you're keen on extending your coastal exploration beyond just Salem. My advice for anyone planning a roadtrip to Salem is this: don't just stay in Salem! The surrounding towns offer such a rich tapestry of experiences, from historic sites to stunning natural beauty and incredible food. Dedicate at least a couple of days to exploring these nearby treasures. You won't regret venturing out and discovering what makes this part of New England so special.
