Reasons I got into lighting candles

Here are some reasons I starting lighting candles:

Some days I didn’t want the “loudness” of electricity && wanted something calm && natural, so I started lighting candles at night.

The scent helped boost my mood or helped me regulate whatever emotion I was experiencing.

The warmth of the candle was comforting

I started to look forward to a candle lit evening and started a routine around lighting candles

My thoughts started to flow better and I wasn’t stuck in a thinking loop about events that happened in the past.

... Read moreIt’s truly incredible how something as simple as a flickering flame can have such a profound impact on our well-being. When I first started exploring the world of candles, my initial reasons were quite straightforward: I craved a quieter, more natural ambiance than electric lights could offer, especially after a long day. But what I discovered went so much deeper, answering the question of 'why do candles make me feel happy' in ways I never anticipated. Beyond the gentle glow, the power of scent plays a monumental role. I’ve learned that different aromas can genuinely act as powerful mood boosters or calmers. For instance, a warm vanilla or sandalwood scent can create a cozy, safe feeling, almost like a comforting hug after a stressful day. On days when I feel overwhelmed, lighting a candle with lavender or chamomile notes helps signal to my brain that it's time to unwind and let go. Conversely, a bright citrus or peppermint candle can surprisingly lift my spirits and bring a sense of clarity when I'm feeling a bit sluggish or uninspired. It’s like having a personalized emotional support system, all stemming from a little jar of wax! The ritual itself has become a cornerstone of my evening routine. There’s something incredibly mindful about the act of choosing a candle, striking a match, and watching the flame catch. It’s a deliberate pause, a moment to transition from the demands of the day to a space of personal peace. This simple act has truly helped me create boundaries between work and rest, preventing those endless thought loops about past events that used to plague my evenings. I realized that these were some of my core reasons I got into lighting candles in the first place – to reclaim my evenings and my mental space. Furthermore, the concept of 'hygge' – the Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment – perfectly encapsulates the candle experience. It’s not just about the light or the smell; it’s about creating an atmosphere. The warmth isn't just physical; it's emotional. It fosters a sense of security and intimacy, whether I'm alone with a book or sharing a quiet moment with loved ones. This feeling of being 'cocooned' in warmth and gentle illumination allows my mind to relax, making space for more creative thoughts and a deeper sense of presence. If you’re looking to incorporate candles into your own life for similar benefits, I'd suggest experimenting with different scents and seeing what resonates with you. Don't just light it and forget it; take a moment to breathe in the aroma, observe the flickering flame, and let yourself be present in that peaceful moment. It's a wonderful way to practice mindfulness and cultivate a personal sanctuary. And remember, always prioritize safety by keeping candles away from flammable objects and never leaving them unattended. Embracing this simple pleasure has genuinely enriched my life, proving that sometimes, the smallest changes can bring the biggest happiness.
