This Book Hurt Me in Ways I Didn’t Expect

I just finished this book and yeah… I’m not okay 😭

This wasn’t just a story, this was PAIN layered on top of more pain. Each brother really had me in my feelings in a different way, but Taahid?? Yeah… I’m still thinking about him 💔

Taliban had to grow up way too fast and you can feel the weight of that in everything he does. Tedman stressed me OUT but at the same time I understood him… and Tremaine just wanted better for himself and his family. Like they all deserved so much more fr.

And Sage… whew. The way her whole life flipped?? I know that had to hurt different. Finding out the person you loved wasn’t really who you thought… yeah that’s a different type of heartbreak.

Now let’s talk about Taliban and Sage 👀

Because why was I rooting for them knowing GOOD AND WELL that situation was messy??? Like it shouldn’t work… but somehow it does??

This book really had me feeling everything stress, heartbreak, a little hope… all of it.

I finished it… but it definitely didn’t leave me 😭📚

... Read moreReading this book felt like an emotional rollercoaster that unpacked layers of struggle and resilience in a way few stories do. The characters, especially the brothers Taliban, Tedman, and Tremaine, each carry unique burdens that shaped their harsh realities. Taliban’s experience of maturing too quickly under pressure hits especially hard—it’s a vivid reminder of how trauma can affect personal growth and relationships. What really stood out for me was how the book explored complicated emotions surrounding family dynamics and broken trust. Sage’s storyline, in particular, brought to life the raw pain of realizing someone you love isn’t who you thought they were. That kind of heartbreak is different; it’s quieter but lingers longer, and the author captures it authentically. The messiness of Taliban and Sage’s relationship added yet another dimension to the narrative. It made me question why I was rooting for them despite the odds against them—it’s that paradox where flawed connections still hold undeniable hope. This contrast between stress, heartbreak, and moments of tentative hope kept me fully engaged. Additionally, the references found in the OCR text, hinting at 'DEM BOYZ FROM DA Bottom' and DIAMOND JOHNSON, suggest the story may be connected or inspired by gritty urban settings and real-life struggles often faced in such communities. This grounding in reality enhances the novel's emotional depth. If you’re someone who appreciates urban fiction that doesn’t shy away from painful realities but also shows the potential for healing and growth, this book is a must-read. It’s a reminder that stories about hardship can be both heart-wrenching and hopeful, leaving an impression that stays with you long after you finish reading.
