📖 I have to admit the illustrations of the book art is what initially caught my eye for this book. When I realized it was written by a Korean author, I was excited to read my first Korean novel!
📖 The story line is intriguing and exceed expectations! This novel is a light- hearted story of a young girl named Serin pursuing alternative versions of what she thinks happiness is in life. She goes through a journey in a magical RainFall Market ran but Dokkaebi’s (Goblins)! Serin meets many new friends and helps them along her time at the market.
📖 Korean culture and mannerisms are prominent in the writing and setting of the story. I did notice some differences in syntax, but I account that to the translation. I would like to seek out more novels written by this author and other Korean translated novels!
⭐️ Overall I give this novel a 4.5 out of 5 stars! I take the .5 off because I would’ve liked to see more development in the last chapter addressing her sister’s & mother’s situation. But the story building up and developing throughout was intricate and satisfying☺️
... Read moreOkay, so after my initial review, I just had to share a bit more about why 'The Rainfall Market' truly captivated me and why it’s a must-read, especially if you’re curious about Korean novels with a magical twist! Beyond the stunning book cover, which immediately drew me in with its vibrant street scene and glowing elements – seriously, it’s gorgeous! – the world You Yeong-Gwang created is just incredible.
The concept of the magical Rainfall Market, run by Dokkaebi (those fascinating Korean goblins!), is pure genius. It's not your typical marketplace; it’s a place where wishes and needs intertwine, often with unexpected outcomes. As Serin, our protagonist, navigates this whimsical yet sometimes challenging environment, you get swept up in the mystery and charm. Each encounter, whether at 'The Gatekeeper' or 'The Misfortune Pawnshop,' feels significant, guiding her closer to understanding what true happiness means. I found myself totally immersed, almost feeling the unique, humid atmosphere of the market described in the book – it truly felt like I was there.
Serin’s journey for happiness is so relatable. She's not looking for grand adventures but rather alternative versions of contentment, and watching her character development unfold naturally was incredibly satisfying. The story cleverly explores themes of self-discovery, friendship, and challenging societal expectations, all wrapped in a light-hearted narrative that still manages to be intricate and thought-provoking. The fact that the novel is based on a letter written to the author gives it such a personal, heartfelt touch that really shines through.
One of the things I truly appreciated was how perfectly this book lends itself to a relaxing read. I loved settling down with it, whether it was for an outdoor relaxing day in the park or just curled up at home. The writing style, even through translation by Slin Jung, is so fluid and engaging, making it easy to lose yourself in Serin's world. And the small details of Korean culture and mannerisms woven throughout add such a rich layer to the story without ever feeling overwhelming.
For anyone who picked up 'The Rainfall Market' because of its gorgeous cover or word-of-mouth about it being a great Korean novel, you won't be disappointed. It’s more than just a fantasy; it’s a heartfelt exploration of life's simple joys and complex questions. If you enjoy stories with a touch of magic, strong character development, and a unique setting, I highly recommend diving into this one. I'm already planning to seek out more novels by You Yeong-Gwang – her storytelling is truly special! This 4.5/5 star read is definitely one for your bookshelf.
