The fight for his queen

#emergingcreator

Vance's office was at the end of a long corridor. Glass walls. Open space. The kind of architecture designed to make visitors feel exposed before they even reached the door. Vincent walked the corridor feeling the weight of that exposure—the sense that every step was being watched, measured, catalogued.

He reached the door. Knocked once.

"Come in."

That voice. Deep. Gravel over bass. The kind of voice that made Vincent's hindbrain whisper *run* even as his legs carried him forward.

He pushed the door open.

Vance's office was massive. Corner suite. Floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides. Dark wood. Leather. A desk that probably cost more than Vincent's car. And behind it, Vance James himself—six-foot-six, three hundred and twenty pounds, filling the leather chair like a king on a throne. His suit jacket was off. His sleeves were rolled to the forearms, exposing the tattoos that coiled around his arms like living things. His goatee was trimmed. His eyes were dark. His hands were folded on the desk, scarred knuckles interlaced.

On the desk in front of him sat a manila folder and a flash drive.

"Close the door," Vance said.

Vincent closed it. The click of the latch sounded final. Irreversible. Like the locking of a cage.

"Have a seat."

Vincent sat. The chair across from Vance's desk was lower than the one behind it—an intentional design choice that forced visitors to look up. Vincent hated it. Hated the way it made him feel small. Hated the way Vance's silhouette filled the window behind him, backlit by afternoon sun, massive and dark and utterly still.

"You wanted to see me," Vincent said. His voice was smooth. Professional. The charm mask, firmly in place. "About the Calloway situation? I wanted to discuss that with you actually. I've been documenting some concerns about the front desk for a while now, and I think—"

"Shut up."

The words weren't loud. They weren't shouted. They were spoken at the same volume as everything else Vance said—low, measured, controlled. But they landed like a gunshot in the quiet room. Vincent's mouth closed. His jaw tightened. The charm mask flickered.

"I'm going to talk," Vance said. "You're going to listen. And when I'm done, you're going to make a choice. But until then, you don't say a goddamn word. Are we clear?"

Vincent's eyes narrowed. The instinct to push back, to assert, to reclaim control—Vincent could feel it rising in his chest like bile. But something in Vance's eyes made him swallow it. Something that wasn't the CEO. Something older.

"Clear," Vincent said.

Vance opened the manila folder. Didn't look at it. Just opened it and turned it around so it faced Vincent.

"Forty-seven emails," Vance said. "Three years. Every single one mentioning a front desk receptionist by name. That's not professional correspondence, Vincent. That's a campaign."

Vincent's face went white.

"I pulled the security footage for every incident in your little dossier," Vance continued. His voice was calm. Terrifyingly calm. The voice of a man who had already decided the outcome and was simply walking Vincent through the steps. "Every single note you wrote about Ivy—every one—was a fabrication. Henderson didn't bypass her because she failed to greet him. He walked past the desk without stopping. Patterson wasn't uncomfortable. She smiled, took her badge, and sat down. You took ordinary interactions and lied about them. Systematically. For three years."

Vincent's hand moved toward the desk—toward the folder, toward some attempt to seize control of the narrative. Vance's eyes dropped to his hand and stayed there until Vincent pulled it back.

"Phone logs," Vance said. He tapped the flash drive. "Calloway's call yesterday went to extension 1001. Tracy's line. Not Ivy's. But you stood in my lobby this morning and told a client that Ivy was the one who answered. You fabricated the complaint. And then I found this."

He pulled a printed sheet from beneath the folder and slid it across the desk. Vincent's eyes dropped to it. His face, already pale, went grey.

The emails. His personal emails to Calloway. The ones he'd accessed from his work computer like an idiot, like a man who thought he was too smart to get caught. *I need a favor. I've got a situation with an employee I've been trying to move out for a while.*

*What's in it for me?*

*The Henderson contract. I'll make sure it goes your way.*

Vincent's hands were shaking. He pressed them flat against his thighs to stop it, but Vance had already seen. Vance saw everything.

"You bribed a client," Vance said. "With company resources. To participate in the harassment of an employee who has done nothing—*nothing*—but exist in your line of sight while being darker than you find acceptable."

"I—" Vincent started.

"I said shut up."

Vincent shut up.

Vance leaned forward. The chair groaned. His forearms rested on the desk, tattoos visible, scars catching the light. His face was close enough now that Vincent could see the individual hairs of his goatee, the sharp line of his jaw, the absolute absence of mercy in his eyes.

"Meridian Partners," Vance said quietly. "Seven years ago. You were let go for 'restructuring.' But it wasn't restructuring, was it? It was complaints. From support staff. About inappropriate comments regarding appearance and race. Women at the bottom. Receptionists. Assistants. The ones who couldn't fight back because fighting back meant losing the paycheck they needed to survive."

Vincent said nothing. His throat worked. His eyes were wide.

"You've done this before," Vance said. "At another company. To other women who looked like Ivy. And they let you walk away quietly. Let you take your poison to a new hunting ground. And you found her. My employee. In my building. Under my roof."

The word *my* landed like a hammer. Vincent flinched.

"And you spent three years trying to destroy her. Not because she was incompetent. Not because she was rude. Because she was too Black and too big for your worldview. Because her existence at that front desk offended your aesthetic sensibilities. Because you're a colorist, Vincent. A racist. A coward who builds paper trails against women who can't fight back because it's the only way you can feel powerful."

Vincent's mouth opened. Closed. His charm mask was gone. Completely gone. What was left underneath was a man who had been caught in the light and was watching his own shadow shrink.

"This is—" Vincent's voice cracked. He cleared his throat. "This is a mischaracterization. Those emails were taken out of context. The Meridian situation was a mutual separation. I can explain—"

"You can explain to my lawyers," Vance said. "And to the EEOC. Because as of fifteen minutes ago, I've initiated a full internal investigation into your conduct, your communications, and your treatment of employees under your sphere of influence. Every email. Every interaction. Every complaint that was buried at Meridian. I've already contacted their HR department, and guess what, Vincent? They didn't delete everything. They just didn't care enough to use it. I do."

Vincent's face crumpled. Not with remorse. With fear. The kind of fear that comes when when a man realizes the ground beneath him isn't ground at all—it's ice, and it's been cracking since the moment he sat down.

"You can't—" Vincent's voice came out strangled. "You can't do this. I have tenure here. I have relationships. Calloway—he won't back your version. He'll never admit to—"

"He already did."

The words dropped into the room like a body hitting the floor. Vincent's mouth froze mid-sentence.

"Calloway received a call from my office twenty minutes ago," Vance said. His voice hadn't changed. Same low, measured, terrifying calm. "He was given a choice. Cooperate with the internal investigation and maintain his contract with Sellerville on revised terms—or deny involvement and lose the Henderson deal entirely. Along with any future business with this company or any entity affiliated with the Obsidian Order."

Vincent's eyes went wide. The Obsidian Order. Vance had said it out loud. In this room. To him. Like it was nothing. Like he was naming the weather.

... Read moreWorkplace discrimination remains a critical issue many face but rarely discuss openly. From personal experience, I’ve witnessed how subtle biases and overt racism can permeate office culture, often hidden behind corporate facades. The story of Vincent and Ivy highlights the painful reality of how power dynamics and prejudice can be weaponized to silence or intimidate marginalized employees. In situations like these, it’s crucial for organizations to implement transparent investigation processes and foster environments where employees feel safe to report harassment without fear of retaliation. The role of leadership, as demonstrated by Vance, can be pivotal in shifting company culture by holding perpetrators accountable and actively protecting victims. I recall when a colleague faced similar discrimination; documenting incidents meticulously, supported by objective evidence like emails or phone logs, helped bring the truth to light. However, the emotional toll is always significant, as victims must navigate not only the injustice but also skepticism and isolation. For those encountering comparable challenges, seeking external advice from human resources or legal counsel can empower them to assert their rights. Moreover, understanding that systemic change requires collective effort encourages solidarity among employees. Sharing stories contributes to awareness and helps dismantle deeply entrenched biases. Ultimately, this narrative serves as a powerful reminder that confronting discrimination—whether racial, gender-based, or otherwise—is essential to fostering equitable workplaces where everyone deserves respect and the chance to thrive.
