One of the ideas on my bucket list was to try a completely new hairstyle. For years, I let my hair grow so long it reached the top of my pants. It wasn’t about following trends or staying stylish—it was simply what I was comfortable with. As someone who lost their vision in my 20s, I stuck to what I knew from my late teens, afraid to experiment.

But about a month ago, I finally took the plunge and cut it. One big reason for the cut was to get rid of all the dead ends and give my hair a fresh start. I also wanted to donate my hair to Locks of Love because I know how much confidence my hair gives me, and I wanted to share that feeling with someone else. Unfortunately, I later learned that chemically treated or colored hair can’t be donated. If I’d known that beforehand, I might have chickened out!

I didn’t just cut a few inches—I went all in and cut 12 inches. And let me tell you, going from super long hair to a short cut was a lot. The shock factor is real. On top of that, I made another big change: I dyed my hair darker for fall and winter, which added to the adjustment. Styling my shorter hair has been a challenge, especially as someone who is blind. With long hair, I had a routine: air-dry it, use a diffuser for some volume, and curl it for definition. I loved wearing it straight occasionally for a totally different vibe, but I relied on my niece Erica, a hairstylist, to straighten it perfectly for me since I can’t see to do it myself. She’s amazing and always helps me out when I need it.

After cutting my hair, I thought I’d master styling it quickly. Let’s just say… I was rudely awakened, lol. Now, I’m patiently waiting for it to grow out enough to feel more familiar again. In the meantime, I’m experimenting with different tools and techniques, but it’s honestly a little daunting.
