Pet Parrots! 🦜

I can’t stop thinking about Jazz while I read Love in the Time of Cholera. Making this post helped me figure out why.

So far the associations boil down to 4 things:

(1) Both books have (talking) pet parrots that are symbolic of themes around love. The main female characters get these pets for their homes AND their birds leave precipitously around a first-chapter death.

(2) Unrequited Love & Desire Themes explored in both books. (emphasized with parrot/bird symbolism)

(3) both are written with a culturally specific music style in mind: jazz for Jazz, Vallenato for Love in the Time of Cholera.

(4) Both authors are Nobel laureates. Toni Morrison won in 1993. Gabriel García Márquez won in 1982.

I am still reading Love in the Time of Cholera, and I’m keeping my eyes peeled for more similarities!
