Annotating Tip ⚔️ Our Vicious Oaths

I finished Our Vicious Oaths by N.E. Davenport, a new standalone Romantasy that partakes in the genre’s beloved tropes but makes them fresh again.

I remember when this book started making waves on Book Threads (specifically Black Book Threads) around the time e-arcs became request-able on NetGalley. Ever since seeing everyone get their galleys and devour the book, I’ve been waiting for my own chance to dive in. Release day was last Tuesday, so I finally got my hands on it. To celebrate reading it at last, I wanted to share my favorite themes and how I annotated them.

Theme 1: AUTONOMY + fantasy tropes that limit selt-determination

✍🏻what to tab✍🏻

• oaths/vows

• prophecies

• the fae custom of Markings

Theme 2: the power of ADORNMENT

✍🏻what to tab✍🏻

• sartorial color choices

• jewelry

• the fae custom of Markings

I tabbed my book out to the max, but don’t feel like you have to tab EVERYTHING that comes up if you choose to tab these themes. Just pick the moments and quotes and choices that catch your eye or speak to you.

ID: three infographics with black backgrounds and pink and purple text explaining my thematic annotating choices for Our Vicious Oaths by N.E. Davenport. All text from graphics is repeated in the caption above.

... Read moreI know many of you are searching for more details on N.E. Davenport's 'Our Vicious Oaths,' and I totally get it! This book captivated me from the start, and if you're on the fence, let me tell you why it's a must-read, especially if you love rich romantasy. First off, let's talk about that stunning 'Our Vicious Oaths' book cover. The imagery of a magnificent golden dragon alongside a regal crown immediately draws you in, promising a tale of power, magic, and perhaps a touch of danger. It perfectly encapsulates the epic scale of the story within. When I look at it, I can almost feel the grandeur of the Fae courts and the weight of ancient prophecies mentioned in the book. Now, about the characters – oh, the characters! N.E. Davenport masterfully crafts individuals who are complex, flawed, and incredibly compelling. You'll find yourself rooting for them, questioning their choices, and desperately wanting to know what happens next. The protagonists navigate intricate political landscapes and personal battles, often grappling with their own sense of self-determination, which is one of the core themes I loved annotating. Their journey is far from straightforward, full of unexpected twists that keep you hooked. I often found myself pausing to imagine what these characters would look like if someone drew 'Our Vicious Oaths' character art – their intricate gowns, battle scars, or even just the raw emotion on their faces. What about those irresistible 'Our Vicious Oaths' tropes? Beyond the fascinating exploration of autonomy and the power of adornment that I highlighted in my annotations, you’ll discover classic romantasy elements that feel incredibly fresh. Think high-stakes political intrigue, complicated family loyalties, forbidden magic, and perhaps even a dash of enemies-to-lovers tension. Davenport weaves these familiar threads into a unique tapestry, making each trope feel earned and impactful. Her world-building is immersive, drawing you into a realm where every decision has weighty consequences. As for 'Our Vicious Oaths' quotes, you'll want your tabs ready! Whether it's a defiant declaration of independence, a poignant reflection on identity, or a witty retort, this book is filled with lines that resonate. I found myself marking passages that spoke to the characters' struggles with destiny, their burgeoning connections, and moments of breathtaking magic. The prose is rich and evocative, making it easy to find those perfect lines that you'll want to revisit. N.E. Davenport truly shines in her ability to craft a world that feels both fantastical and deeply human. Her writing style balances intricate plotlines with genuine emotional depth, making 'Our Vicious Oaths' a standout in the romantasy genre. If you're looking for a book that offers both thrilling adventure and profound thematic exploration, you absolutely have to pick this one up. It's a read that stays with you long after the final page, inspiring discussions and, of course, plenty of annotations!

Okay maybe BookTok doesn’t care. Really I don’t care either. But annotating is one of my favorite things to do as I read! I don’t like to highlight or mark up my books. I was taught from a young age not to write in books, and it’s stuck with me. Which is why annotating tabs and clear sticky not
