I’m deep in Pharmacology right now as an LPN student, and honestly? The concepts make sense but trying to remember every single drug name, class, and side effect got me fighting for my life 😩 excuse my handwriting 🥹😂

Sometimes I mix up everything I just studied especially after work or taking care of real-life stuff. But I keep reminding myself: even with a job, even with kids, even when it’s tough… you can still do this.

If you’re a nursing student, nurse, or anyone in healthcare, how did y’all survive Pharm? 😂 Drop your best memory tips on comments DONT BE STINGY Y’alll HELP ME 😭😂👇 — flashcards, mnemonics, songs, whatever worked for you pretty please!!

... Read moreOkay, fellow nursing students, let's talk real. If you're an LPN student like me, or any nursing student diving into pharmacology, you know it's a beast! Remembering every drug name, class, mechanism of action, side effect, and nursing consideration feels impossible sometimes. I've been in the trenches, feeling completely humbled, and honestly, the struggle is real when you're balancing life, work, and endless studying. But I've started picking up some strategies that are making a huge difference, and I want to share them with you! First off, active recall is a game-changer. Instead of just re-reading notes, try to explain a drug or drug class out loud without looking at your materials. This forces your brain to retrieve information, strengthening those neural pathways. It's tough at first, but it works! Next, mnemonics and memory aids are your best friends. For example, for antibiotics like Sulfonamides (think Sulfa-), remembering "Photosensitivity" and "Drink plenty of water" (to prevent crystalluria) can be crucial. Or for Tetracyclines (like Doxycycline), thinking "No Dairy, No Sun, No Pregnant ladies" helps you recall common contraindications and side effects. For drug classes like antiarrhythmics, creating a silly sentence with the first letter of each class can embed them in your memory. Don't be afraid to get creative! I've also found that using pharmacology templates is incredibly effective, much like the 'Antibiotic Application Sheet' or the detailed 'Pharmacology Template' I've been using, which covers areas like drug class, action, uses, side effects, and nursing considerations. These templates help you organize information consistently for each drug. I even created my own for Intranasal Steroids and Antihistamines to make sure I hit all the key points. When you're studying drugs like Penicillins (e.g., Amoxicillin) or Aminoglycosides (like Gentamicin), having a structured template helps you compare and contrast, making it easier to remember nuances. Speaking of specific drugs, understanding common side effects is critical. For instance, knowing drugs that can cause severe skin reactions like Steven's Johnson syndrome (which I definitely looked up thoroughly!) is not just for exams but for patient safety. My ATI medication templates for specific drugs like Acetaminophen or Amiodarone also help me focus on specific aspects like dosage, adverse reactions, and patient teaching. Don't underestimate the power of flashcards. Digital ones are great for on-the-go study, but sometimes physically writing them out helps cement the information. Focus flashcards on the most high-yield information: generic/trade names, primary use, major side effects, and key nursing implications. Finally, connect pharmacology to the real world. Think about why a particular drug is given and what you would assess as a nurse. This makes the information less abstract. Pharmacology is challenging, but with consistent effort, smart study techniques, and a supportive community, we can definitely master it. Keep pushing, future nurses!
