📚💊 Starting my LPN program
I’m curious — what are YOUR tips for studying pharm?
✨ How did you approach dosage calculations? (How extreme do they get? 👀)
✨ What were case studies like for you?
I’ll be honest… I’ve been having a lot of anxiety about failing the program. Even though they gave us a practice packet during orientation (and so far I’ve been doing good on it 🙌), the fear still creeps in. Did anyone else feel this way starting out? What did you do to push through?
And for my faith family 🙏 — if you believe in God, how did He pull you through your program? I’d love to hear your testimony. 💛
Hey everyone! I totally get that feeling of anxiety when starting your LPN pharmacology journey, especially when it comes to dosage calculations and those tricky powdered medications. I remember being right where you are, staring at those 'ADVANCED DOSAGE CALCULATIONS' problems and wondering if I'd ever get it right. But trust me, you absolutely can! One of the biggest game-changers for me was really understanding the process of reconstitution of powdered drugs. It's not just about memorizing a formula; it's about visualizing what you're doing. Always, always check the label for the specific diluent and volume to add, and pay close attention to the resulting concentration. My tip? Make a little cheat sheet or flashcards for common powdered meds you might encounter, breaking down the steps: 1. Read drug order. 2. Read label (diluent, volume, concentration). 3. Calculate final dose. 4. Double-check! Another area that often trips people up is pediatric dosages. These are critical because errors can have much more severe consequences. We learned several methods, but the weight-based calculations (mg/kg/day or mg/kg/dose) were the most common. My advice is to practice, practice, practice! Don't just do the problems once; redo them a few days later to solidify your understanding. I found that drawing out little diagrams of the syringes and vials helped me conceptualize the amounts. For all types of advanced dosage calculations, including drip rates and IV push medications, consistency is key. My program emphasized dimensional analysis, and once it clicked, it was like magic. If your program uses a different method, stick with it, but make sure you understand the why behind each step. Don't be afraid to ask your instructors to re-explain concepts in different ways. They want you to succeed! Regarding practice, if your school uses resources like ATI, lean into them! They often have fantastic practice problems and rationales that really help reinforce concepts. I’d also recommend finding online resources or even a dedicated workbook just for dosage calculations. The more exposure you get to different scenarios, the more confident you'll become. And for the anxiety part? You're not alone. I felt it too. What helped me push through was creating a study routine that included short, focused study sessions rather than cramming. I also found a study buddy who was just as determined as I was, and we'd quiz each other, explaining concepts until we both understood. Sometimes, just vocalizing your fears to someone who gets it can make a huge difference. Finally, if faith is important to you, I truly believe praying for clarity and calm helped me immensely. Before big exams or tough study sessions, I’d take a moment to center myself. Remember, this journey is tough, but you're capable and you're not walking it alone. Keep practicing, keep asking questions, and you'll absolutely master LPN pharmacology!

Most important thing is just to familiarize yourself with the suffixes. You will not know every medication. That’s ok . Don’t even try it just to save your own sanity 😂
