Immune system 🧫

... Read moreThe immune system plays a crucial role in protecting the body against pathogens and allergens. It is complex, with several types of reactions categorized as Type I through Type IV. Type I reactions involve IgE-mediated anaphylactic responses, typically seen in allergies such as hay fever and asthma, which can lead to severe health challenges if not managed. Type II reactions, often cytotoxic, involve IgG antibodies and can occur in situations like hemolytic transfusion reactions, where the immune system attacks red blood cells. In addition, chronic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are associated with Type III hypersensitivity, wherein immune complexes form and can cause tissue damage. Conversely, Type IV reactions are delayed and cell-mediated, involving T-cells and macrophages that play roles in graft rejection and tuberculin tests. Treatments vary across these reactions, including antihistamines for Type I, anti-inflammatory medication for Type II, and immunosuppressive drugs for autoimmune conditions. Understanding these mechanisms can aid in better health management and prevention of serious allergic reactions and autoimmune responses.
