Thalassemia 🩺💉

2024/6/5 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! As someone deeply interested in medicine, I constantly try to break down complex topics into understandable bits. Today, I'm diving into Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder that can sound intimidating but is fascinating once you understand its roots. I’ve been studying diagrams that really help visualize what’s going on at the cellular level, and I wanted to share my insights with you. First off, Thalassemia isn't just one condition; it's a group of inherited blood disorders. The core issue revolves around hemoglobin, the protein in our red blood cells that carries oxygen. Hemoglobin is made of two types of protein chains: alpha globin and beta globin. Problems with the genes responsible for these chains lead to Thalassemia. Let's talk about Alpha Thalassemia first. This type occurs when there's an issue with the alpha globin genes. These genes are located on chromosome 16. Normally, you have four alpha globin genes (two on each chromosome 16). If one or more of these genes are deleted – yes, a gene deletion on chromosome 16 – your body won't produce enough alpha globin chains. The severity of alpha thalassemia depends on how many of these genes are missing. Losing one might make you a silent carrier, while losing all four can lead to a very severe condition called hydrops fetalis, which is often fatal before or shortly after birth. Seeing a diagram of chromosome 16 alpha globin genes really helps to visualize how these deletions impact the overall production. Then there's Beta Thalassemia. This type is associated with problems in the beta globin gene, frequently referred to as the HBB gene. This crucial gene is situated on chromosome 11. Unlike alpha thalassemia, where deletions are common, beta thalassemia usually results from specific mutations in the HBB gene on chromosome 11. These beta globin gene mutations on chromosome 11 can cause reduced or absent production of beta globin chains. For instance, my studies show a common genetic substitution, like a UGG to UAG genetic substitution, which can lead to a premature stop codon, effectively halting beta globin production. The article's diagram vividly illustrates the HBB gene chromosome 11 diagram and its precise location. So, what's the big difference between alpha vs beta thalassemia? It's all about which globin chain is affected and which chromosome the faulty gene resides on. Alpha thalassemia involves alpha globin chains and chromosome 16, while beta thalassemia involves beta globin chains (HBB gene) and chromosome 11. Understanding the alpha beta globin chains diagram helps clarify this distinction. Ultimately, both types lead to anemia because defective globin chains can't form stable hemoglobin. This results in fewer and abnormal red blood cells, which are often smaller and paler than healthy ones, a condition known as microcytic hypochromic anemia. The thalassemia blood cells diagram I’ve seen highlights these crucial differences between normal and thalassemic blood cells so clearly. It's truly eye-opening to see how a small genetic change, like an HBB gene mutation on chromosome 11, can have such a profound impact on our blood and overall health. Learning about the genetic basis of thalassemia has been incredibly insightful. It underscores how intricate our bodies are and how understanding these specific genetic locations, like the HBB gene location on chromosome 11 or the alpha globin genes on chromosome 16, is key to diagnosis and potential future treatments. Hope this breakdown helps you understand Thalassemia a little better too!

So how do you fix it? I have this and doctors keep telling me to take iron and it’s doing nothing but producing more abnormal cells

Low MCV is commonly related to iron deficiency, but when it’s not, and there isn’t a chronic anemia situation going on, it’s likely an underlying thalassemia. Lead poisoning and Sideroblastic anemia can do it too, but those are less common. And common things are common. Now, with a thalassemia i
