OC Practice of the Week

Here are some random OC designs that will be a part of my WIP futuristic stories set during a cryptid/zombie apocalypse #art #sketch #originalcharacter #fyp #trending #punk #futurism #originalwork #writing #magic #prosthetics #comics #action

... Read moreCreating original characters (OCs) for a futuristic, apocalyptic setting is such a blast, and I wanted to share some of my personal insights into how I approach it. When I'm brainstorming designs, especially for a world like a cryptid/zombie apocalypse, I really focus on combining practicality with a distinctive aesthetic. First, let's talk about the 'punk-futuristic' vibe. For me, this means blending gritty, DIY elements with advanced technology. You might see a character with ripped jeans and a cropped top, but those details are often paired with highly detailed prosthetic or cybernetic arms, as seen in some of my sketches. I love playing with that contrast—it tells a story about survival and adaptation. What would people wear when resources are scarce, but technology is still around, perhaps scavenged or jury-rigged? Long hair, boots, and even an anarchy symbol on clothing can instantly communicate that rebellious, survivor spirit. Then there's the 'apocalypse' aspect. Every piece of clothing or gear should ideally serve a purpose. For instance, tactical gear like a shoulder holster or dog tags isn't just for show; it suggests a combat-ready individual. When I designed the muscular male character punching a blade, I thought about how his physical prowess and potentially enhanced capabilities (those shattering blades!) would be essential for survival. His helmet-like headpiece could be for protection or communication in a dangerous world. It's about thinking: what tools and protections would my characters need to navigate a world overrun by cryptids or zombies? I also consider how their environment shapes them. Would their clothing be patched up? Are their prosthetics pristine or battle-worn? The character with the long-sleeved shirt and ripped jeans might have them for protection from the elements or to blend in. The design isn't just about what looks cool; it's about reflecting their experiences and struggles. Are they scavengers, fighters, or perhaps even reluctant heroes? Incorporating elements like magic (as mentioned in my initial tags) alongside prosthetics can add another layer of uniqueness. How does a character wield both ancient power and advanced tech? This opens up so many possibilities for their abilities and visual representation. Ultimately, designing futuristic OCs for an apocalyptic narrative is about blending function with expressive style, telling a story through every detail of their appearance. I hope these thoughts help you envision your own amazing characters!
