Eyes are often considered the soul of a portrait, and getting those shapes just right can be a game-changer. I've been diving deep into eye drawing lately, and I wanted to share some of my personal findings, especially on finding good reference eye shapes and what makes them so captivating. First off, don't be intimidated! Like anything in art, it's all about practice and observation. When I started Drawing More Eyes! (as my latest sketch session was titled), I realized how crucial it is to study different eye types. Not all eyes are the same – think about almond-shaped eyes, round eyes, hooded eyes, or even the subtle differences in an older person's eye versus a child's. Each shape tells a story! Finding Your Perfect Reference Eye Shapes: Real-Life Observation: Honestly, the best references are all around us! Look at friends, family, or even yourself in a mirror. Pay attention to how the eyelids curve, the placement of the tear duct, and how light reflects in the iris. Don't just draw what you think an eye looks like; draw what you *see*. Photography: High-quality photos are invaluable. Websites like Pinterest, Unsplash, or even just a Google image search for "eye references" can yield tons of diverse examples. Try to find images with good lighting that clearly show the contours and shadows. Anatomy Books/Diagrams: For a deeper understanding, sometimes it helps to go back to basics. Knowing the underlying structure – the eyeball as a sphere, how the eyelids wrap around it – can help you create more convincing and three-dimensional eyes. My Approach to Drawing Different Eye Shapes: I usually start with a light sketch of the overall eye socket and then establish the basic shape of the upper and lower eyelids. Remember, they aren't just simple lines; they have thickness and curve around the eyeball. I focus on the negative space too – the skin around the eye, the brow bone. This helps define the actual eye shape. Once the basic shape is down, I move on to the iris and pupil. The pupil should always be perfectly round (unless stylized), and the iris often gets partially covered by the eyelids.
