"If one day I disappear...Will you still bake the same bread, Anon? "

Anon, at 28, looked at the warm homemade bread oven in a creamy shirt with folded arms and linen aprons, recalling the joking words of "Tin," the only close friend in his life. Tin was a cheerful postman. He often stopped by the store every morning to steal fresh bread and complained about the scar on the back of Anon's right hand: "Because you're going to help a stray cat get a wound. Your hand is so rough. Girls are willing to shake hands." Anon usually just smiled and put warm bread in his best friend's leather bag without saying anything.

Their relationship was so strong that everyone in the market was jealous of their friendship until a knot of conflict began to form. When Tin began to behave strangely, he slowed down to pick up letters and parcels at Anon's store. His once-cheerful face became pale and noticeably thinner. Tin often left Anon a thick brown envelope sealed letter with the command: "Do not open and read until the day I send the letter." Anon thought that his friend was joking, so he kept the letter in the dough drawer carelessly.

Drama began to intensify the mood on a rainy night, and bad news spread throughout the market...Tin had a motorcycle accident, lost his main post, slipped upside down, hit an electrical pole in the severe rain. Anon immediately left the shop running through a rainstorm to the hospital. When the emergency room door was opened, he found Tin's body surrounded by a ventilator. The pulse signal was faint. Tin opened his eyes to Anon one last time. A trembling hand tried to reach and stroke the scar on the back of a dear friend's right hand. Tears seeped. "I...Send a letter...Not anymore..." At the end of the sound, the pulse signal became a long straight line. Anon collapsed, crying, hugging his best friend's soulless body.

But the truth is too badly cornered and squeezed the heart...

After the funeral passed, Anon came back to the store in sadness, and he remembered, and opened the drawer and read the brown envelope that Tin had left. It was not a personal letter, but a medical consent document, and a short message in Tin's handwriting:

"Anon...If you read this letter, it means that my eyes are with you. The doctor said that I have terminal brain cancer and will not last more than three months. I know that you are going to be blinded by acute macular degeneration and how much you love this bread shop, so I pretend to have an accident...So that my cornea that fits you is delivered instead of saying goodbye, I don't want you to see me in a weak, rotting state in front of me from now on...Use my eyes to look at the bread shop we built, dear friend. "

Anon was stiff, and tears flooded his two cheeks until the sight was blurry, a beautiful and painful knot at the same time...The accident on a rainy night was not a coincidence, but the final intention of a true friend to exchange his life for his return to view the world, a young man bent on the back of his right hand...The old scar caused by saving the stray cat that Tin once mocked. Now, Tin's original eyes are fixating on it through Anon's own face. Anon smiles tearfully. Amid the smell of baking nets of bread in the shop, Tin does not leave him, but Tin will remain as the eyes and breath of friendship in his heart forever.

💡 Thoughts

True friendship is measured not at being together on a happy day, but at "great sacrifice" on the day when another person falls into darkness. Having someone give us light on the day we cannot see is the most precious blessing in life.
