NO WATCH LIST: Kid’s Shows ❌

hello ◡̈

These shows are on my children’s NO WATCH LIST — meaning if anyone else is watching them, they’re not allowed to put these shows on.

❌ Cocomelon

❌ SHARKDOG

❌ Blippi

❌ BEBEFINN

❌ Boss Baby (the show)

❌ Caillou

❌ Peppa Pig

❌ Masha & the Bear

Truth is, I prefer to use screen time as a tool. Like when I’m wanting to get things done or just want my toddler to be entertained while I relax for a moment (currently 8 months pregnant so I have to do what I have to do sometimes!) BUT when I’m choosing a show, I like for them to be less stimulating and more educational. There’s no true value in the shows I listed above and in fact some of them truly just teach poor behaviors. Shows like Bluey, Trash Truck, Puffin Rock and even sometimes an educational animal documentary are our go to’s.

... Read moreAs a busy mom, I completely get the need for screen time – it's a lifesaver when you need to cook dinner, take a call, or just catch a breath. But over the years, I've become much more intentional about what my kids watch. I've realized that not all children's programming is created equal, and some shows, while popular, can actually be detrimental rather than helpful. My biggest concern often boils down to shows that are profoundly 'overstimulating for young children.' You know the ones – fast-paced, bright colors, constant scene changes, catchy (and sometimes annoying) songs that repeat endlessly. While they might grab a child's attention instantly, this constant barrage of sensory input can overwhelm their developing brains. I've noticed it can lead to shorter attention spans, increased irritability after watching, and sometimes even difficulty transitioning back to calm, independent play. It's like their little minds are on overdrive, making it harder for them to regulate themselves. Beyond the overstimulation, there's the issue of behavior. I've seen shows that, unknowingly to some parents, promote 'lying, talking back and poor behaviors.' It’s subtle sometimes, but when characters consistently whine to get their way, disrespect adults, or throw tantrums without facing consequences, our children absorb that. They see these actions modeled and might start mimicking them, thinking it's an acceptable way to interact. As parents, we're constantly teaching our kids about kindness, respect, and problem-solving, and it's frustrating when the entertainment they consume undermines those lessons. Then there are the shows that feel a bit like 'adults acting like toddlers.' While the intention might be to be relatable or silly, it often comes across as condescending or simply not appropriate modeling for young children. Our kids look up to adults for guidance, and when they see grown-ups engaging in childish antics, it blurs the lines of appropriate behavior and can make it harder for them to understand boundaries. Some shows even feel like a 'Cocomelon knock off - overstimulating, addicting,' designed purely to hook kids with repetitive content rather than fostering genuine learning or creative thought. So, what's a parent to do? My approach is to seek out shows that are not only entertaining but also genuinely enriching. We look for programs that have a slower pace, gentle transitions, and characters who model positive social-emotional skills like empathy, problem-solving, and resilience. Shows that explore nature, different cultures, or teach basic concepts in a calm way are gold. Think about shows with clear narratives, where characters learn from their mistakes and demonstrate constructive ways to handle emotions. It's also about how we use screen time. I try to make it a tool, not a default. Sometimes, that means co-viewing with my child, so we can talk about what's happening on screen and reinforce positive messages. Other times, it means setting clear limits and ensuring screen time is balanced with plenty of opportunities for imaginative play, outdoor adventures, and reading. Before introducing a new show, I often watch an episode or two myself to get a feel for its pace, themes, and character interactions. This helps me decide if it aligns with our family's values and won't contribute to overstimulation or negative behavioral modeling. Ultimately, every family's journey with screen time is unique. But by being mindful of the content our children consume, we can ensure that their exposure to screens is a positive and beneficial part of their development, rather than a source of stress or poor habits. It's about making intentional choices that support their growth and well-being.
