It looks complex but is super easy to assemble the night before. And if you have action figures lying around, staging a wrestling match with your elf being 'captured' is a fantastic way to use existing toys and create a funny 'elf trap' scenario without much effort. Another fun 'trap' idea is to have your elf 'fishing' for goldfish crackers in a bowl – it looks like he’s caught a whole school of treats! Candy canes are a must-have for the elf season! Beyond just a simple 'candy cane hunt' for the kids to find, which is always a hit, I love integrating them into the elf's scene. Our elf once used candy canes as a makeshift swing set, hanging between two rolls of wrapping paper. Another year, he made a little 'candy cane fort' around himself. You can also have your elf 'zip-lining' from a candy cane hooked onto a light fixture to another point in the room. The possibilities are endless, and you can often find bulk packs of candy canes on Amazon, making it an affordable prop! Sometimes, you need ideas that take literally two minutes. This is where those funny rubber duck scenes in the sink come in handy – just add water and maybe a little Santa hat. Or, have your elf 'sunbathing' under a lamp with some mini sunglasses (you can find these in doll accessory packs or even on Amazon). The 'elf in a Starbucks cup' with a cute note is another brilliant one when you're short on time but want a big impact. My elf, Snowflake, left a note saying 'I heard you love STAR BUCKS...' with a few dollar bills, and my kids thought it was hilarious that the elf was paying for coffee! Even just having your elf sitting with a family photo and adding googly eyes to everyone in the picture is a quick win that always gets a smile. The key to surviving Elf on the Shelf is having a stash of props and a list of ideas ready. Keep a box with mini marshmallows, sprinkles, small toys, and craft supplies. I often grab small, inexpensive items from dollar stores or even Amazon's toy section. Don't be afraid to reuse ideas every other year, or adapt them to fit your home's decor.
