Before the day ends, TGIF for me means that it’s play time with my toddler, laundry day, and trying to get as much done for the week ahead so I can relax on Sundays 🥰
... Read moreLaundry day might feel like a never-ending chore, especially when you're trying to keep up with a busy schedule and little ones! For me, Fridays are usually my big laundry push, and over time, I've really refined my system for sorting and washing clothes by color. It used to be a guessing game, but now I've got a routine that saves my clothes from fading and keeps them looking vibrant. Trust me, it makes a huge difference, especially with all those cute, colorful children's clothes!
You might wonder, 'Is sorting really that important?' And my answer is a resounding YES! The main reason is to prevent dye transfer, which can turn your crisp white shirts into a muddy gray or stain your light-colored items. Plus, different colors respond better to different water temperatures and detergents, helping them maintain their original brightness and preventing premature wear. It’s all about protecting your investment and keeping your wardrobe looking its best.
So, how do I actually sort my 'sorted laundry'? I usually break it down into these main groups:
Whites: This includes anything pure white – towels, bedding, white T-shirts, socks. These usually get the hottest water and sometimes a little non-chlorine bleach on occasion if they're looking dingy. Hot water is fantastic for sanitizing and getting whites sparkling.
Lights: Think pastels, light grays, light blues, and yellows. These are typically fine with warm or cold water. I use a gentle, color-safe detergent here to protect their delicate hues.
Darks: All the blacks, dark blues, dark grays, browns, and dark purples go into this pile. This is where I'm extra careful. I always wash darks in cold water to prevent fading and often turn them inside out. There are also specific detergents formulated for dark clothes that help lock in color, which I highly recommend!
Brights/Reds/Oranges: These can be tricky! Sometimes I give bright reds and oranges their own small load for the first few washes, just to be safe. They tend to bleed more than other colors. Cold water is a must for these to keep their vibrancy.
Delicates: While not strictly color-based, if I have any delicate items (like silk blouses or lace lingerie) that are brightly colored, I'll hand wash them or put them in a mesh bag with a separate, gentle cycle in cold water.
Here are a few of my personal pro-tips for laundry day success:
New Clothes Alert: This is a big one! For any brand new colored item, especially dark or vibrant ones, I always wash it separately the first one or two times. This helps get rid of any excess dye that might otherwise stain your other clothes. This is particularly important for new children's clothes, as they often come in such vibrant hues!
Water Temperature Matters: As I mentioned, cold water is your best friend for colors, especially darks and brights. It significantly reduces the risk of bleeding and fading. Hot water is generally reserved for whites that need a really deep clean or sanitization.
Detergent Choice: There are so many options! I lean towards color-safe detergents for most of my loads. For very dark items, a detergent specifically designed for darks can work wonders in preserving their richness.
Don't Overload: Stuffing the washing machine doesn't allow clothes to move freely, meaning they don't get as clean, and it can also increase friction, leading to more dye transfer. Give your clothes some space to tumble!
Check Pockets! My toddler loves to hide treasures, so a quick pocket check is a must – crayon explosions are not fun on a freshly washed white load!
It might seem like a lot of steps at first, but once you get into the rhythm, sorting by color becomes second nature. My laundry day goes so much smoother now, and I feel great knowing that my family's clothes are being well cared for. It's just one less thing to worry about during my busy week, leaving more time for playtime – like with that green toy truck my little one loves! Give these tips a try and see how much brighter your laundry days become!
