Watch Your Mouth, Guard Your Heart….

This morning while reading Proverbs 17 through 19, I had to stop mid-verse and say, “Okay God, I hear You!” Because whew, these chapters will read you before you even finish reading them.

For a long time, I used to be quick to react, ready to defend myself at the slightest offense. But God has been working on me! I’m realizing that peace often wins battles my words never could. Lately, I’ve been reflecting on my words, because Proverbs 15:18 says it plain: “A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but one who is slow to anger calms strife.”

I used to wear that “I said what I said” badge like it was holy. But maturity has a way of humbling you. God started showing me that just because I could say something didn’t mean I should.

Then Proverbs 16:2 hit me like a gut punch: “All a person’s ways seem right to them, but the Lord weighs the motives.” Whew. That means I can sound justified, I can even believe I’m right, but God looks at my motive, not my mouth. I had to ask myself…was I speaking to bring peace or to prove a point? Was I using my words to build or to break?

And Proverbs 16:24 reminded me that “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” See, the Bible doesn’t just tell us to hold our tongue…it teaches us to make our words sweet. Not fake sweet, but heart-checked sweet. The kind of sweetness that heals instead of harms.

God doesn’t just care about what you say, He cares about why you said it. Speech isn’t just communication, it’s character on display. Proverbs connects wisdom with the tongue because your mouth reveals the condition of your heart.

Jesus said in Matthew 12:34, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Meaning if your heart is bitter, your words will be too. But if your heart is healed, your mouth will sound like honey. Every word you speak is either building your house or tearing it down.

So ask yourself…is your heart’s posture matching your mouth’s performance?

... Read moreThe wise teachings from Proverbs about guarding our speech and the condition of our heart remain deeply relevant today. Proverbs 17:27 encourages us to "Pause Before You Respond," teaching that silence can be more powerful and peace-promoting than a hasty defense. This helps prevent conflicts fueled by quick tempers, as supported by Proverbs 15:18 which contrasts a hot-tempered person with one who calms strife. Proverbs 16:2 reminds us to be mindful of our motives. It’s not only what we say but why we say it that matters to God. Asking ourselves if our words aim to help, heal, or harm can transform our communication and character. Proverbs 22:11 recommends speaking "with Grace and Truth," balancing kindness with honesty to avoid harshness or weakness. In addition, Psalm 51:10 calls us to pray for a clean heart, recognizing that "the mouth speaks what the heart holds." Starting each day asking for inner renewal helps align our words with godly spirit. Proverbs 20:19 urges avoiding gossip and negativity, since harmful words poison character and relationships. Instead, Proverbs 18:21 encourages affirming ourselves with life-giving speech, reflecting our chosen and grace-covered identity. This wisdom also highlights the connection between heart healing and speech: "You can’t expect honey to flow from a bitter heart." When bitterness lingers in the heart, words reflect that pain, hurting both speaker and listener. But when the heart is healed, speech becomes sweet and healing, "pleasant words like a honeycomb." Cultivating this heart-mouth harmony means intentionally guarding our tongues, reflecting on our motives, and speaking words that build rather than tear down. This practice leads to healthier relationships, inner peace, and spiritual growth. By letting God refine our tongues and hearts continuously, we embody Proverbs’ powerful wisdom in daily life, transforming our speech into a source of blessings and healing.
