Be the Church when church is over.
Everybody in church won’t be your friend, and everybody won’t like you. That’s okay.
But what isn’t okay is allowing personal feelings, unresolved offense, favoritism, or clique culture to determine how you treat people while claiming to represent Christ.
We can’t preach forgiveness and practice avoidance.
Jesus gave us instructions for conflict: “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you.” Matthew 18:15
In other words, have the conversation. Don’t create sides.
This isn’t church bashing. It’s correction.
Jesus said people would know we are His disciples by our love. John 13:35
So ask yourself: What does how I treat people when church is over say about the Christ I claim to represent?

Navigating relationships within church communities can often be challenging, especially when you face exclusion or unresolved issues. In my own experience, I’ve encountered moments where tension among church members made it difficult to feel fully welcomed or connected. What helped me most was embracing the principle shared in Matthew 18:15—addressing conflicts directly and privately with the person involved rather than allowing resentment or division to take root. It’s crucial not to confuse healthy boundaries with hostile exclusion. Setting limits to protect your heart doesn’t mean shutting out others intentionally. Instead, it encourages maturity and Christlike love in how we relate to fellow believers. For instance, I once found myself on the fringe of a social group within the church, but rather than retaliate or withdraw coldly, I chose to maintain kindness and openness. That decision led to new and deeper friendships over time. Avoiding the temptation to form cliques or favor ‘‘in-groups’’ aligns with Paul’s exhortation in Romans and Ephesians about humility, patience, and honoring one another above ourselves. These teachings remind us that our behavior outside the sanctuary matters just as much as during worship. Genuine reconciliation often requires courage and vulnerability, but it also fosters a healthier church culture where love overcomes division. Leaders especially must model this character, demonstrating hospitality and self-control as outlined in Titus and 1 Timothy. Their example sets the tone for the entire congregation. In short, being ‘‘the Church’’ after the service means living out forgiveness, confronting issues honestly without gossip, and rejecting clique culture that can fracture the body of Christ. When we do, our love becomes a visible testimony to the presence of Jesus in our lives, fulfilling His command in John 13:35. If you’ve ever felt isolated or sidelined within a church setting, remember that your response reflects the Christ you represent. Choose love, pursue peace, and cultivate grace even when it’s hard—because Christianity was never meant to end at the benediction.
