Just finished reading this one yesterday and I am so glad I got to know the ending.

I really enjoyed this series! I liked the concept and the characters.

They just started a little slow for me. This one was slower than the first.

But I still liked them, and really reccomend this series!

... Read moreOkay, so let's talk more about Rachel Gillig's 'Maiden, Monster, Martyr' because my brief initial thoughts really just scratched the surface! This book, which I recently finished, truly cemented my love for this series, despite a few initial bumps in the road. When I first dove in, I'll admit, it felt a little different from the first installment. The pacing seemed to take its time, building layers rather than rushing into action, which might feel slow for some readers who prefer a faster-paced fantasy right from the start. But for me, that slow burn ultimately paid off in a big way. What really shines in 'Maiden, Monster, Martyr' is the intricate world-building and the depth of the characters that Rachel Gillig has crafted. The concept of this series is just so unique, blending elements that I haven't seen explored in quite the same way within the fantasy genre. I found myself completely immersed in the lore, the political machinations, and the magical system that underpins everything. Every detail felt deliberate, adding to the rich tapestry of the narrative. It wasn't just a backdrop; it felt like a living, breathing entity that influenced every character's decision and every plot development. Speaking of characters, they are truly the heart of this story. I loved getting to spend more time with them and seeing their evolution. In this particular book, some characters truly come into their own, facing incredibly difficult choices that push them to their limits. Their struggles, their growth, and their relationships felt incredibly authentic and three-dimensional. There were moments where I genuinely gasped at their decisions and cheered for their small victories. Even the side characters felt well-developed and played significant roles, making the world feel even more populated and real. This is where the 'slower' start actually became a strength, allowing more time to connect with their journeys. While the plot might have taken a bit to fully unfurl compared to the first book, the payoff was absolutely worth it. Once things started moving, they moved fast, and I found myself unable to put it down. The twists and turns were genuinely surprising, and the way Rachel Gillig wove together various plot threads was masterful. I appreciate how this book explored themes of power, sacrifice, and identity in a nuanced way, adding intellectual depth to the adventure. It wasn't just a thrilling ride; it made me think and reflect long after I turned the last page. For anyone who enjoyed the first book in the series, or if you're looking for a fantasy series that offers deep world-building, complex characters, and a story that truly develops over time, I wholeheartedly recommend 'Maiden, Monster, Martyr'. Don't let the slightly slower pace deter you; stick with it, and you'll be richly rewarded with a captivating story that stays with you. It's definitely a standout read for me this year, and I'm already eagerly awaiting what Rachel Gillig has in store next!
