The picture is pretty, but this review is not. I gave this book 1⭐️.

Im not actually finished yet, but theres absolutely no way that the last 30 pages are going to be any better than the previous 373 that I have already read. This was definitely the worst book I have read this year, and maybe ever. This was not a christmas story, and not really a mystery like I was expecting. Not only was it about 200 pages too long, I did not like the time period it was written in. That way of speaking really just slows me down which was already a slow pace because I could not get into it. I am pretty PO that I wasted all this time reading it when I could have been reading other books. Thankful for my last 4 audiobook hours on spotify so I could get a good chunk listened to because without it, I’d still be on page 250. I really want to tell you to not waste your time reading this- unless you are a die hard conspiracy theorist. This book for real was not for me.

Have you read this?! Did I miss something?!

... Read moreMany readers pick up a murder mystery set during the festive season hoping for a thrilling yet cozy Christmas narrative. However, not all books labeled as 'Yuletide murder mysteries' fulfill this expectation. One common issue is the use of an antiquated writing style that can slow down the reader and impact overall engagement. This seems to be the case with the book "Murder at Lly in a Village of Lies... Death Comes with the Snow" by Denzil Meyrick, which is described by some as a quintessential slice of Yuletide murder mystery by external reviews, but readers who prefer modern pacing or clearer plots might find it challenging. The book’s lengthy nature—reportedly about 200 pages longer than necessary—can detract from the suspense and momentum crucial to mystery genres. When a story drags, particularly when the prose style reflects the time period it was written in, it risks losing readers who expect a brisk pace or intricate plot development. Additionally, some reviewers felt the book did not embody a Christmas story or a mystery in the way they anticipated, suggesting a mismatch in genre expectations based on the cover and marketing. For readers who enjoy deep conspiracy theories or very traditional styles of storytelling, this novel might still hold appeal. Audiobook versions can help hasten progress for those struggling with the written pace, making it easier to consume but not necessarily improving the story’s quality. If you’re considering this book, it’s wise to review multiple opinions and sample the writing style to see if it suits your taste. Book clubs like #lemon8bookclub and communities such as #bookwormsoflemon8 can offer valuable insights. And if you prefer holiday mysteries with a faster pace and clearer plotlines, exploring other titles might provide a more satisfying experience. Understanding readers’ preferences and expectations can prevent disappointment and guide you toward books that truly resonate with your interests, especially during the festive season.
