Foods to Eat Before Your Period 🩸

2025/6/26 Edited to

... Read moreNavigating your period doesn't have to be a monthly struggle filled with discomfort. I've personally found that what you eat in the days leading up to your period can make a huge difference in how you feel, from tackling those annoying cramps and bloating to managing mood swings and intense cravings. It's all about giving your body the right nutrients to support hormonal changes and reduce inflammation. One of my secret weapons for reducing period discomfort has been focusing on foods rich in Vitamin B6. You know those days when you feel totally drained or extra irritable? That's where Vitamin B6 comes in. It's essential for producing neurotransmitters that regulate mood, and it can also help reduce water retention. I make sure to stock up on bananas, chickpeas, and potatoes – they're not just tasty, but excellent sources of B6 that can really help with mood and energy levels. Pairing these with some lean protein can keep your blood sugar stable, which is key for avoiding those sudden energy crashes and intense cravings for sugary snacks. For those relentless cramps, magnesium-rich foods are a lifesaver. Think leafy greens like spinach, dark chocolate (yes, really!), nuts, and seeds. Magnesium helps relax muscles, which can significantly ease uterine contractions. I always try to add a handful of almonds to my breakfast or snack on some pumpkin seeds throughout the day. It's a small change that makes a big impact. And if bloating is your main enemy, boosting your potassium intake can help balance fluids. This is where those lovely avocados – which you might have seen in my visuals – and more bananas come in handy, along with sweet potatoes. They help counteract the sodium that often contributes to water retention. Don't forget healthy fats! Foods like salmon, flaxseeds, and yes, more avocados, provide essential fatty acids that support hormone production and can help reduce inflammation, further easing period pain. And for those insatiable cravings, especially for carbs, opt for complex carbohydrates like whole grains, oats, and lentils. They provide sustained energy, keeping you fuller for longer and preventing those blood sugar spikes and crashes that lead to desperate snacking. Beyond what you eat before your period, continuing these nutrient-dense habits during menstruation is also super important. Think about iron-rich foods like red meat, lentils, or fortified cereals to replenish what's lost, especially if you experience heavy bleeding, which can lead to fatigue. And always, always stay hydrated! Drinking plenty of water can improve energy levels, reduce bloating, and even help with headaches. Herbal teas, especially ginger or peppermint, can be soothing too. By making conscious food choices, I've found that my period has become much more manageable, allowing me to feel more in control and less impacted by those monthly fluctuations.
