To be honest I probably packed a tad too light for a 10-11 hour day.
I finally got a new lunch box/bag and have been eyeing this one forever! It’s super pricy but so far I love it and it holds a lot. I hear it lasts a long time quality wise as well. I got this as a congratulations for getting into a masters program gift to myself!
Today I packed light as I mentioned. Left over stuffed pepper soup (posted on my page), some almonds I didn’t finish yesterday, an extra water in case I finish the water in my Owala, and some zero sugar cranberry juice as a little treat to myself.
I packed light mainly because the stuffed pepper soup is VERY filling. I’ll probably have the almonds towards the end of my shift to tide me over till dinner!
... Read moreLong shifts can be incredibly demanding, not just on your energy levels but also on your meal planning. I recently packed what I thought was a 'light' lunch for my 10-hour day, but my homemade stuffed pepper soup proved surprisingly filling and got me through! It really made me think about what works best for staying satisfied and energized during those marathon workdays.
That stuffed pepper soup was a game-changer. The combination of protein (from the meat or lentils if using a vegetarian version), rice, and a good amount of vegetables made it incredibly satisfying and kept hunger at bay. If you're looking for other hearty options that truly stick with you, I've found that robust grain bowls with quinoa or farro, loaded with roasted veggies and a solid protein source like grilled chicken, chickpeas, or tofu, are fantastic. Lentil soup or a thick, chunky chili are also winners – packed with fiber and protein, they provide sustained energy. Even a large, colorful salad can be super filling if you remember to add substance like hard-boiled eggs, avocado, nuts, and a good, creamy dressing.
Beyond just being filling, making healthy choices is absolutely key for sustained energy. I always aim to include a good mix of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. For quick hydration and a little refreshing treat, that sugar-free cranberry juice I packed was perfect. And having an extra water bottle is non-negotiable for me – staying hydrated is crucial! To make meal prep easier during a busy week, I often spend a little time on Sunday preparing things like pre-chopped veggies or a batch of dressing. I frequently use a bento box to keep different components of my meal separate and fresh, which is ideal for a deconstructed salad or wraps, preventing sogginess.
For those moments when you still need a little something to tide you over, healthy snacks are absolutely essential. My almonds were perfect for that end-of-shift slump. Other great options include fresh fruit, a single-serving yogurt, or even a small handful of homemade trail mix. Don't forget about having a dedicated utensils case – it makes eating on the go so much easier, more hygienic, and helps reduce waste!
Speaking of practicality, a good quality lunch bag can make a huge difference to your daily routine. My new Calpak bag, which I mentioned, surprisingly holds a lot and keeps everything cool for hours. When choosing a lunch bag, look for features like good insulation, multiple compartments to organize your food, and overall durability, especially if you're making an investment. It truly elevates the whole lunch-packing experience and makes long days a bit more comfortable. Ultimately, it’s all about finding what keeps you satisfied, healthy, and energized throughout your longest shifts!
Yea so imma need you to tell me where you got that adorable lunch box from 😍
