A girl can dream.. #fyp #nursesoftiktok #scrublife #newgradnurse #nurselife
You know that feeling, right? When someone innocently asks, 'So, what do you like to do for fun outside of work?' And in your head, all you can hear is that little voice screaming, 'As if I'm not at work 24/7?!' That pretty much sums up my life as a nurse lately. It's not just a job; it's a lifestyle, and sometimes it feels like it consumes every waking (and sleeping) moment. I often find myself dreaming of having a robust list of hobbies – painting, hiking, learning a new language, maybe even just consistently reading a book that isn't a medical journal. But the reality hits hard. After a 12-hour shift, often without a proper break, all I want to do is collapse into bed. The mental and physical exhaustion is real. We're constantly on our feet, making critical decisions, providing comfort, managing crises, and all with a smile (mostly!). It's incredibly rewarding, but it leaves very little in the tank for much else. The #nurselife can be incredibly isolating in that sense. Your non-nurse friends might not fully grasp why you're always tired, why your plans are constantly changing due to unexpected overtime, or why you sometimes just need to decompress in silence. It's not that we don't want to have a vibrant social life or pursue passions; it's that the demands of our profession often make it feel like an impossible dream. I remember one time, I bought a whole set of watercolor paints, so excited to try a new artistic outlet. They sat untouched for weeks, then months, gathering dust on my shelf. Every time I looked at them, I felt a pang of guilt, wishing I had the energy or the uninterrupted time to just sit down and create. It's a common story among my colleagues too – gym memberships unused, half-finished craft projects, forgotten language apps. So, how do we, as nurses, navigate this constant juggle? It’s tough, but I've been trying to find small ways to reclaim bits of my personal life. Sometimes it's as simple as making sure I have a really good cup of coffee before my shift, or taking a few minutes to meditate in the car before heading home. On my rare days off, I try to prioritize one small thing that makes me happy, even if it's just a leisurely walk or catching up on a favorite show without interruptions. It's about recognizing that "me time" doesn't have to be grand; it can be those tiny moments that help us recharge. To all my fellow #nursesoftiktok, #scrublife warriors, and #newgradnurse friends out there, I see you. I understand the struggle of giving so much of yourself and having so little left. Let's keep sharing these raw, honest moments. It helps to know we're not alone in this dream of a more balanced life. What are your tiny victories or ways you try to carve out time for yourself? I'd love to hear them!
